Rúben Amorim may choose to select Altay Bayındır and Mason Mount as Manchester United travel to face Newcastle in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.
Manchester United resume their Premier League campaign on Sunday afternoon with a visit to St. James’ Park, where they’ll take on a high-flying Newcastle side.
The Reds, currently 13th in the league, are without a goal in their last two domestic fixtures but showed signs of improvement in midweek, scoring twice in a 2-2 draw with Lyon in the Europa League.
Rúben Amorim’s men looked to be building momentum before the March international break, but a defeat to Nottingham Forest and successive draws against Manchester City and Lyon have disrupted their rhythm.
They now face a Newcastle team chasing Champions League football, with Eddie Howe’s side sitting 5th and eager to solidify their place in the top five.
Mount and Bayındır to start
While André Onana has started every Premier League fixture since he signed for United, Amorim may be set to start Altay Bayındır instead, with the Cameroon international fearing he may be dropped this weekend following a series of error-strung performances.
In defence, following good performances from Nousair Mazaroui, Harry Maguire, and Leny Yoro across the back three against Lyon, all three look set to remain in the XI.
The same also applies to Diogo Dalot and Patrick Dorgu, who will likely continue as the right and left wing-backs, respectively, as Amorim selects his team to face Newcastle at St. James’ Park.
As for the midfield, there is a chance that Bruno Fernandes will drop into the middle of the park alongside Casemiro, with Manuel Ugarte dropping to the bench.
This would allow Amorim to start “game-changer” Mason Mount on the left of the front three, and although Alejandro Garnacho has come under fire for his performances of late, Amorim has been keen to point out positives, and may continue to start the young winger on the right-hand side.
Following his goal against Lyon after coming off the bench, Joshua Zirkzee is expected to lead the line, with Rasmus Højlund dropping to the bench.
