Barnsley boss delivers ruthless assessment after 7-0 loss to Manchester United
Barnsley boss Darrell Clarke has delivered a ruthless assessment after their 7-0 defeat against Manchester United in the Carabao Cup.
Marcus Rashford gave Manchester United the lead with a confident finish, soon followed by Antony doubling the score from the penalty spot.
Alejandro Garnacho added a third goal just before halftime, securing a strong lead for the Reds.
In the second half, both Rashford and Garnacho scored again, while Christian Eriksen completed his brace to cap off the win.
Erik ten Hag’s team put on a stellar performance, cruising into the fourth round of the cup with a convincing victory.
Barnsley boss delivers ruthless assessment
Darrell Clarke, manager of Barnsley and a boyhood United fan, was not impressed by his team’s performance at Old Trafford.
Despite the difference in quality between League One and the Premier League, he was furious with the performance of many of his players, which “ruined ” a proud evening for him.
“I have had a go at them. I wasn’t happy with the performance, I know we have come to Man United, who have world class players, but I wasn’t happy with how we played,” he said, via the Barnsley Chronicle.
“Mael (de Gevigney) was the only player who comes out with credit. Did the occasion get to some of them? Yes probably. We have to understand what it takes to be a top player.
“Don’t ever let me hear one of them talking about how bad some Premier League players are. They are miles off. The players were miles off the standards of a top Barnsley player tonight never mind a top Premier League player.
“It was proud night for myself but it’s been ruined by the performance. Some of the mistakes for the goals, I didn’t recognise.
“We were a mile off. My biggest fear was that we wouldn’t do ourselves justice, and I don’t think we did.”
