Aston Villa icon delivers “mind-blowing” verdict on Marcus Rashford move and Ruben Amorim mistake
One Aston Villa icon has delivered a “mind-blowing” verdict on Marcus Rashford’s loan move from Manchester United.
Marcus Rashford had been sidelined at Manchester United since early December after expressing his openness to a new challenge in an interview.
The club’s No.10 was available for loan throughout the January transfer window and had a strong preference for a move to Barcelona, who showed interest in signing him.
However, financial constraints at the Spanish club, due to a lack of outgoing transfers, prevented them from covering his wages. As a result, both United and Rashford explored alternative options.
Aston Villa emerged as a suitor, with manager Unai Emery keen to secure the deal. An agreement was reached for Rashford to join Villa on loan for the remainder of the season.
Rashford has since stated his desire to help Villa in their Champions League campaign after the club secured a place in the knockout stages.
Villa icon Merson delivers verdict on Rashford move
Former Aston Villa player Paul Merson has delivered his verdict on the surprising January move for the 27-year-old.
He suggests that Rashford will want to show those at Old Trafford why they were wrong to let him leave in a “mind-blowing” decision from Amorim.
Merson also believes that the United boss could be in trouble if Rashford ends up finding his form at Villa Park this season.
“Ruben Amorim is running out of ideas at the moment,” Merson told Sky Sports News. “He’s struggling badly.
“What he’s done with the Rashford situation is mind-blowing. His job is on the line at this rate. If Rashford gets ten goals in ten games – and Manchester United carry on the way they’re playing – then the board will be asking the question: ‘What are you doing?’
“He might be one of them where the Villa fans and the manager open their arms to him and he will go: ‘I’m going to show that Amorim. You bad mouthed me, embarrassed me by saying I wouldn’t get in over a 63-year-old goalkeeper coach.’
“I think he can come back. It could end very badly for Amorim – he would be under severe pressure if they keep playing badly and Rashford starts ripping it up at Villa. He won’t be the Manchester United manager for long.”
Rashford is set to make his debut for Villa in the FA Cup this weekend against Tottenham Hotspur as he is not cup-tied in the competition.
Meanwhile, United face Leicester City in the same competition on Friday and Amorim will be looking to solve the goalscoring issues at Old Trafford.
