“Would love to…” Angel Gomes opens up on a potential Manchester United return
Angel Gomes has opened up about a potential return to Manchester United following his recent call-up to England’s national side.
In 2016, Angel Gomes became Manchester United‘s youngest player in the Premier League, coming on as a substitute against Crystal Palace in 2017 towards the end of the season, just before Jose Mourinho took the Europa League crown.
He came on for Wayne Rooney, and many saw the moment as a poetic changing oft he guard as Gomes was considered United’s brightest academy talent.

However, Gomes made just ten first-team appearances before leaving the club on a free contract in 2020. He eventually signed for Ligue 1 side Lille, where he has become an integral part of their side.
At the age of 24, the English midfielder is becoming a very hot commodity. He recently made his debut for England, which has fueled rumours that he may one day return to his childhood club.
However, in a recent interview, Gomes explained that although he has a soft spot for United, he would not push too hard to gain a move back to Old Trafford.
“There will always be that sentimental soft spot, so of course, it’d be difficult to say no,” he admitted to The Times.
“As amazing as it would be, after finding happiness abroad, I know that playing in the Premier League is not the be-all and end-all.”
This comes after an interview he gave last year in which he admitted that he would love to return to the club despite making the difficult decision to leave, but he is wary that football is entirely unpredictable.
“It was a very difficult decision,” Gomes told L’Equipe. “In my heart, I wanted to leave, in my head, I was thinking of staying. But I had to follow my heart. I felt that I needed to take another step in my career.
“I felt that had I stayed, there wouldn’t be a lot of opportunities for me. Luis Campos [Lille’s then sporting director] and Lille spoke about their project and I believed in it even more, that’s what convinced me to move – the faith Lille had in me.
“Do I imagine myself coming back one day? It’s home. I would love to come back. But you never know in football. I just have to keep my feet on the ground and keep playing, making the most of it. I can’t predict what will happen in the future.”
