Ange Postecoglou issued a 229-word message about Rúben Amorim on Friday afternoon, and Manchester United would do well to listen to what he had to say.

Manchester United make their return to Premier League action on Sunday afternoon with a crucial clash against Tottenham Hotspur in North London.

The two sides have already shared a thrilling contest at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this season, with Spurs edging a dramatic 4-3 encounter to knock Rúben Amorim’s men out of the Carabao Cup. With league points now at stake, both teams will be eager to set the record straight.

It has been a turbulent campaign for both clubs, who find themselves in unfamiliar territory—United sit 13th, just two points ahead of 14th-placed Spurs. Given their lofty ambitions, neither side can afford to drop points as they look to salvage their season.

For Amorim, this match is another key step in molding his squad and stamping his authority on the team. Meanwhile, Postecoglou is under increasing scrutiny, with Spurs supporters growing restless after a string of disappointing results. With pride, points, and pressure all in play, Sunday’s showdown promises to be an unmissable battle in North London.

What Postecoglou thinks about Amorim’s appointment

Speaking to the press ahead of their meeting on Sunday afternoon, the Australian boss made a 229-word comment on Amorim’s tenure at United so far, with the portuguese boss having lost seven of his last 11 Premier League matches.

“I’ve got respect for all managers because I know how tough it is,” Postecoglou told reporters on Friday.

“I’m sure if you asked Rúben that he would say he was just doing what he was brought in to do. Obviously they’ve scouted him, they’ve identified him, the way he plays, the way he goes about his business. You don’t just make these appointments because you like the look of someone. You do actually a lot of work and you bring him in with a purpose.

“Now, if anyone believes that anything can change significantly in a short space of time, they’re living in an alternative universe that is not based on reality. I’m sure – who am I to advise anybody – but if Man United stuck with Rúben for the next two years, they’d see progress, absolutely, because that’s how long it takes.

“And if someone can show me somebody who has done it quicker without significant investment, by all means put it across my desk and I’ll follow that blueprint. But we know there’s a blueprint there.

“I’m sure irrespective of the noise — I’ve only literally spoken to Rúben for probably 30 seconds at a game — I’m sure he’s there going: ‘I’m going to do what I was brought into do’ and that’s what he should do.”

United would do well to listen to Postecoglou

In the last 12 years since Sir Alex Ferguson departed, it has felt as if United have failed to properly back any of their permanent managers, and have often fled at the first sign of danger.

Under Jose Mourinho, the club refused to back him in the transfer market and eventually sacked him following tensions between the manager and board, while poor runs of results have seen the likes of Louis van Gaal, Ole Gunnar Solskjær, and Erik ten Hag all handed their notices, too.

As Postecoglou explains, it takes about two years to start seeing good results and changes when a club is starting from scratch, and United would do well to heed his advice and stick with Amorim for more than just a few short seasons if a quick fix cannot be found.

United have an aim to win the Premier League by 2028, and when Amorim was asked about this, he said: “Yes, we talk about that, our focus is to win the Premier League and we can change everything in a few years. In this moment, we are in a difficult position, but we need to work every day and focus on the little steps.”

The end of the 2027/28 season would represent the end of Amorim’s third full season in charge at Old Trafford, and if they want the 40-year-old to be the man to bring home that trophy, they must listen to Postecoglou and stick by him.
