“It’s irrelevant…” – Ange Postecoglou flips Man United question around, it’s a fair response
Ange Postecoglou responded to questions about Manchester United’s chances of catching Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League table.
United’s hopes of catching the Champions League-chasing pack were squandered in their latest Premier League clash against Brentford, where they dropped two points.
Erik ten Hag’s side now sit eight points behind Tottenham Hotspur in fifth-place, which could be good enough for Champions League qualification.
However, there are still questions about whether United can make up the ground in the final nine games of the season.
When asked about the possibility of United being able to catch Spurs in his latest press conference, Postecoglou flipped the question on its head when mentioning that Spurs are the same amount of points behind title-challenging Manchester City.
“I don’t know. Can you see us challenging Manchester City?” he responded when questioned about United’s chances of catching them. “No? Well, they’re only eight points ahead of us. So if you don’t see us…
“Well, that’s what I’m saying: If there’s eight points, you either think we can catch Man City, who are eight points ahead of us, or you think Man United can catch us. To me, it’s all irrelevant.”
While the comments may be frustrating to read as a United fan, you cannot disagree with the Spurs boss’s point.
They are not considered to have even a slight chance of challenging for City’s spot in third place, so why should there be an expectation that United can catch Spurs or Aston Villa right now?
Especially considering United’s form has been poor for most of this season, and they have games against Liverpool, Arsenal and Newcastle in their final fixtures.
