André Onana had his first outing as a Manchester United player during their 2-0 loss to Real Madrid on Thursday morning.

Despite goals from Jude Bellingham and Joselu, André Onana‘s first fixture as Manchester United‘s new goalkeeper had plenty of positives.

With his style much more suited to Erik ten Hag‘s way of playing in comparison to his predecessor David de Gea, Onana collected many plaudits for his performance against Real Madrid.

However, ahead of kick-off, not everyone was convinced of his signing, with legendary United striker Andy Cole voicing his concerns ahead of the fixture.

“I don’t care if you can do 10 kick-ups, a goalkeeper needs to be able to save the ball,” Cole told MUTV ahead of kick-off.

“The manager has changed the way he wants to play from the back. He wants to play with a goalkeeper who is comfortable with the ball at his feet. This is the case with Onana.”

Onana’s performance, however, completely put these doubts to bed. Beyond his obvious talent on the ball, Onana made two fantastic saves, one with his feet and one diving to his right to deny Vinicius Jr.

The new No. 24’s performance was a great introduction to what he will bring to the side in the future, with the player keen to be involved in play as much as he can.

“When you play against Real Madrid, you will concede chances because it’s a very good team. But overall, [he played] really quite well,” Ten Hag told MUTV when asked about Onana’s performance.

“He was there when we conceded chances and I think everyone has seen he made a good debut.”
