Player Ratings: Manchester United 0-2 Real Madrid
Manchester United lost 2-0 against Real Madrid in their fifth pre-season friendly game as Erik ten Hag’s side came out second best.
Jude Bellingham gave his side an early lead with a perfectly executed chip over United’s new signing Andre Onana. However, the replays showed that it could’ve been given offside in a competitive match with VAR in play.
The Reds struggled to get a hold of the game like they have in previous fixtures. Following second half changes, they gained more possession and chances to score but a late bicycle kick from Joselu ended their chances of getting back into the game.
The player ratings are in for the encounter:
Andre Onana – 7/10
Misread the situation for the goal as he came out to block Jude Bellingham’s path when he probably didn’t need to. Otherwise, he made one solid save and as expected he was excellent in possession. His starting position is also a breath of fresh air and helped United in the first phase.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka – 5/10
A difficult period against Vinicius Jr defensively. Linked up well on occasion going forward.
Raphael Varane – 5/10
Faced difficulties against the Madrid press.
Lisandro Martinez – 7/10
Received a yellow for a late challenge on Bellingham. Decent otherwise. Good on the ball deep and will only get better alongside Onana.
Luke Shaw – 7/10
Good defensively and a few brilliant touches. Probably United’s best player before the changes mid-way through the second half.
Casemiro – 5/10
A sloppy performance for his standards in his first start of pre-season.
Kobbie Mainoo – N/A
An unfortunate injury in the opening minutes. Hopefully nothing serious.
Mason Mount – 6/10
A quite display on the ball, although came closest to scoring for The Reds after a smart run into the box but couldn’t connect well with his instinctive shot. Pressed well individually but the team wasn’t always on the same wavelength.
Bruno Fernandes – 6/10
Not very involved from the right-wing in the first-half. Moved centrally in the second but didn’t find much more success. Played the most minutes of any outfield player.
Alejandro Garnacho – 6.5/10
Sharp with the ball at his feet but unable to conjure up many chances. One fierce strike towards goal was saved well.
Marcus Rashford – 5/10
Isolated up front. One chance came his way in the first-half and it almost ended in an assist for Garnacho instead. In the second half he had one notable chance blocked after drifting to the left. It seems in these kind of games, where United are planning to break on the counter with the Englishman, he is far more suited to playing from the left.
Substitutes
Christian Eriksen – 5/10
Quite poor in and out of possession after replacing Mainoo. Some sloppy and wayward passes in promising areas.
Harry Maguire – 7/10
A good display from the bench. Looks more comfortable playing progressive passes from the right side compared to last season.
Victor Lindelöf – 6.5/10
Also good from the bench.
Brandon Williams – 7/10
A solid display and some great passes as well as some fierce challenges.
Diogo Dalot – 6/10
Done OK on the right.
Donny van de Beek – 7/10
A positive cameo. Constantly looking to find space and was successful on multiple occasions.
Scott McTominay – 7/10
A powerful run and shot was one of the best chances of the game for United.
Jadon Sancho – 5/10
Created a half chance for Van de Beek soon after coming on. Too sloppy in other moments.
Facundo Pellistri – 6/10
A really good turn to create a United attack and was brought down. Decent cameo.
Antony – 6.5/10
Active and created chances for himself. Perhaps a bit frustrating with his long range efforts even if they do sometimes come off.
