André Onana reacts to Monaco’s transfer interest as Chelsea set to benefit from Manchester United decision

André Onana has responded to Monaco’s interest in making the Manchester United goalkeeper their new goalkeeper this summer.

After signing their first player in what is set to be a very busy summer for the side, Manchester United are shifting their attention now to selling squad players who are deemed surplus to requirements to get as much money as possible to sign their targets.

Players such as Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, Jadon Sancho, and Antony are all expected to leave the club this summer, to offload them permanently, rather than on loan for another season.

United remain in the market for a statement striker signing and midfield depth, and with the club already signing Matheus Cunha for £62.5 million and being heavily linked with a move for Bryan Mbeumo, which could cost upwards of £50 million, United must sell to buy this summer.

One of these players, whose future has become uncertain, is André Onana, who has attracted interest amidst rumours of a potential departure this summer.

Onana makes his response to Monaco known

As revealed exclusively by UtdDistrict last month, Ruben Amorim has a good working relationship with the Cameroonian, and United aren’t desperate to sell the keeper, but is not unsellable.

Despite interest from AS Monaco, according to ESPN, Onana is “keen to stay” at United, as the Cameroonian aims to turn things around at Old Trafford.

As things stand, the 29-year-old plans to stay at Old Trafford unless he is told he is surplus to requirements at the club by Amorim.

Monaco were rumoured to be weighing up their options between Chelsea keeper Djordje Petrović and Onana.

With Petrovic being a cheaper option, Chelsea could benefit from Onana’s decision to stay, as they could sell the keeper who seemingly has no future at Stamford Bridge, given his exclusion from the Club World Cup squad.

Could Onana be forced out of Old Trafford?

Despite his intentions to stay at the club, Emi Martínez has made his desire to sign for United this summer well known as Aston Villa look to offload players to meet Profit and Sustainability Rules following their failure to qualify for the Champions League.

However, to facilitate a move for the 32-year-old goalkeeper, United would likely need to sell their current No. 1. With prior interest from Saudi clubs, the Cameroonian could yet attract offers that help finance a potential deal.

With United’s financial situation this summer, an estimated £40 million outlay for Martinez should be used elsewhere, as there a more pressing issues that need addressing in the current squad.

Despite having a number of poor performances across his two seasons at United, a forward line that managed just 36 goals across all competitions last season is a much more pressing issue than the goalkeeper.
