Andre Onana already has perfect response to bizarre Man United legend comments
Andre Onana made his Manchester United debut on Thursday in a 2-0 loss against Real Madrid in a pre-season friendly.
Overall, it was a solid performance from United’s new shot-stopper, who made three solid saves alongside displaying his excellent ball-playing skills.
However, there are already people waiting for the former Inter Milan goalkeeper to fail. He takes over from David de Gea and many did not believe the Spaniard needed to leave the club.
Dwight Yorke, who scored 66 goals for the club, believes that the Cameroon goalkeeper has issues in his game that could be exploited in the Premier League and that he isn’t as good as De Gea.
“I hope this doesn’t come back to haunt Man United now they’ve bought Andre Onana,” he told OLBG. “Be careful what you wish for. De Gea is the Golden Glove winner, a high profile player who has made mistakes, like the rest of us. In my opinion, Onana is not as good as De Gea and people need to watch him very carefully.
“I will be watching this guy [Onana] very closely, and the people who have criticised De Gea and wanted him to leave will probably be the ones who will be calling him to come back. I’m hoping that doesn’t happen for United’s sake.
“I’ve seen Onana before, the Premier League is a different kettle of fish with how fast the game is and how often you are pressured. Onana tries to be an outfield player rather than a goalkeeper sometimes.”
These comments are unsurprising as the media glare always brightest at Manchester United. Luckily, Onana has already proven that he has the correct mentality to ignore the outside comments and focus on what Erik ten Hag wants from him.
In an interview during a difficult period at Ajax, following his return to action after his drug ban, Onana was asked about criticisms of his game.
“People can say what they want, I don’t care,” the goalkeeper stated. “I just do my thing, if you are angry that’s your problem. If you are happy, it’s your problem. So for me, it doesn’t matter.
“Only take the criticism from the coaches. For the rest, they can sing, they can cry, I don’t give a s**t.”
Whilst Yorke will be bizarrely waiting for the shot-stopper to slip up, Onana will be taking no notice of the outside noise – which is something you need in order to be the number one goalkeeper at Old Trafford.
