“Amazing, Underwhelming” – Rating every Man United players’ 2022/23 season
Manchester United’s 2022/23 campaign was filled with highs and lows but was largely successful for Erik ten Hag in his first season at Old Trafford.
The United boss provided a top three Premier League finish as well as winning the club’s first trophy in six years. An additional final appearance in the FA Cup was also positive despite the bitter defeat to Manchester City at Wembley to lose the cup.
At UtdDistrict, we have been rating the players for each and every performance across the campaign. In this article, I will be attempting to rate the entire squad’s performances across the campaign in as short-and-sweet of a manner as possible.
*Players rated will have made at least five appearances across all competitions for Manchester United in 2022/23
Here we go…
Goalkeeper
David de Gea – 4/10
The goalkeeper cost the team in big moments multiple times this season with errors and failed to adjust well enough to a ball-playing style of football. Whilst he can still pull out shot-stopping excellence, it’s clear that United need to now move on from the Spaniard.
Defenders
Aaron Wan-Bissaka – 7.5/10
After looking set to leave the club in January, Wan-Bissaka turned his United career around with consistent performances in the second half of the campaign.
Diogo Dalot – 7/10
One of United’s best players in the first half of the season but could not find that form following his World Cup injury with Portugal.
Harry Maguire – 5/10
Minimal game-time after being rightfully displaced in the lineup. Again, he had some good performances but seemingly always had a mistake brewing. Best for all parties if he leaves and attempts to rebuild his career elsewhere.
Victor Lindelöf – 7/10
Solid when called upon, especially following Lisandro Martinez’s injury in the back-end of the season. A perfect rotational defender and one that Ten Hag regards as ‘untouchable’ in the transfer market.
Lisandro Martinez – 9/10
He would’ve easily been a contender for the club’s Player of the Season if he hadn’t missed as many games through injury and being (justifiably) hungover from Argentina’s World Cup heroics. One of the best players on the pitch in almost every game he played.
Raphaël Varane – 8/10
Very solid alongside Martinez and led well, especially when the likes of Lindelöf and Shaw were stationed alongside him.
Luke Shaw – 8.5/10
Phenomenal player who was able to shake off two poor performances at the beginning of the campaign to become one of the side’s most important players again. His cameos at centre-back showed how much Ten Hag rates him.
Tyrell Malacia – 6/10
Despite carrying criticism for some mistakes across the season, Malacia offered a solid debut campaign for a 23-year-old coming from the Eredivisie.
Midfielders
Casemiro – 9/10
Simply transformed the midfield at Old Trafford both defensively and offensively. There’s not much more to say. His unfortunate tendency to be on the end of suspensions were the only thing holding him back from potentially getting 0.5 higher in his rating.
Scott McTominay – 6/10
The Scotsman actually had a solid start to the season but, of course, faded into the background once Casemiro found his way into the side. Some OK cameos throughout the rest of the campaign but nothing special.
Fred – 7/10
How hard is it to rate the tenacious Brazilian? He goes from terrific to tragic on a weekly basis it seems but I do think there was certainly more good than bad, especially in his impactful substitute performances.
Christian Eriksen – 7/10
A great signing and was important in the midfield but also shown that his weaknesses out of possession are difficult to carry if United want to continue improving.
Donny van de Beek – 5/10
A player that many thought would finally get a solid chance at Old Trafford. Didn’t do enough in his cameos up until his unfortunate injury in January.
Marcel Sabitzer – 6.5/10
A few very nice performances in the attacking midfield role but didn’t really offer much when tasked with playing in the slightly deeper position he was brought on loan for.
Bruno Fernandes – 9/10
Another amazing season at the Theatre of Dreams for the Portuguese. Slightly lower numbers in terms of goals and assists but has been able to offer much more in his general game.
Forwards
Antony – 6.5/10
Perhaps disappointing when looking at the price tag but was an important cog in the system when United played well. Still, a lot of room for improvement.
Jadon Sancho – 5/10
An underwhelming campaign for Sancho. Time spent away from the pitch and inconsistent performances defined his campaign. Ended the season well but will need to show those levels consistently next term to ensure his long term future at the club.
Anthony Martial – 5/10
Availability is one of the most important traits and Martial just cannot offer it anymore. He either looked incredibly sharp or completely off it when he was on the pitch.
Wout Weghorst – 3/10
The loanee striker might’ve suffered from the first choice option being injured so often but however you spin things, zero goals in the league is just very poor. He had some good moments too, offering an important contribution in the Carabao Cup final.
Marcus Rashford – 9/10
Thirty goals. Carried United’s lacklustre frontline and was in simply mystifying form from January to March. The weight on his shoulders perhaps shown in the latter stages of the campaign but it was still a great comeback season for Rashford.
Alejandro Garnacho – 8.5/10
A stunning debut campaign for the teenager. Ten Hag’s secret weapon from the bench and United lost some spark when he was injured. The only way is up for this exciting talent.
Facundo Pellistri – 7.5/10
Many would argue he deserved more opportunities. Impressive whenever he played despite that not being too often.
Anthony Elanga – 5.5/10
Barley played in the second half of the season. Some good displays towards the start of the campaign.
Cristiano Ronaldo – 4.5/10
There’s way more to talk about off the field than on it. Ultimately; it was best for both sites to go theirs separate ways. Very underwhelming before he left in November.
