Ajax’s club chief has made his feelings clear about the potential to sign one of Manchester United’s midfielders this summer, with the player in question set to depart the club on a free transfer.
Ajax and Manchester United have a very good relationship, but they may not need to enter into negotiations for the player in question. The midfielder is set to depart the club upon the expiry of his contract later this year, with United unlikely to offer a new deal.
Christian Eriksen effectively made his name at Ajax, and if things align correctly, he could be set for a return to the Dutch club this summer.
The Danish midfielder is free to negotiate with any club he wants, and the Ajax chief has not ruled out re-signing the former Spurs man.
The man in question is Marijn Beuker, who in a recent interview made some very interesting comments about Eriksen.
Ajax not ruling out Eriksen move
Ajax are opening the door to Christian Eriksen’s potential return to the club this summer, after Marijn Beuker had the following to say in a recent interview.
Speaking to ESPN recently, Beuker detailed a return for Eriksen is a possibility, but not at the expense of a potential academy graduate breaking into the first team.
“He is one of the players who has performed fantastically with us in the past that we are thinking about.”
“There will be multiples in the media. Other names mentioned are those of Dusan Tadic and Daley Blind”.
“Such players are always an option. To look at it. It has to fit into the phase we are in, though. In the salary structure. You also don’t want to block youth players coming up. That we are open to thinking about it is clear. Only it has to fit into the overall picture for the future.”
Manchester United have not offered Eriksen a new deal up until this point, and with the player’s contract set to expire in June, there is very little chance that situation will change.
The Dane has featured 99 times for the Reds since signing in 2022, scoring seven goals while assisting 17. He was a key cog in Erik ten Hag’s side finishing 3rd during his debut campaign but has since failed to nail down a true starting position, particularly this season after the arrival of Ruben Amorim.
Clever move by Ajax
Ajax would benefit from the arrival of a player like Eriksen. The 33-year-old has shown his quality in bursts this season, and in a less physically demanding league like the Dutch league, his on-ball ability is more likely to thrive.
Having an experienced pro like the United midfielder will also be beneficial for the younger players in the squad, as Ajax looks to try and claim back the Eredivisie next season, having not won it since Erik ten Hag left the club in 2022.
United will look to replace Eriksen with a younger player on the market, or even an academy player, with Jack Moorhouse and Sekou Kone ready and raring to get regular first-team opportunities.
Eriksen’s time at United will be looked back on fondly, but this summer’s departure is best for both parties, and a move to Ajax would be a brilliant way to live out the last embers of his career.
