Altay Bayındır is set to be handed his debut at Manchester United amid André Onana’s decision to play at AFCON.

A lot has been made about André Onana so far at Manchester United, with the player putting in some good performances combined with costly errors, most notably in the Champions League.

Erik ten Hag signed Onana for £45 million from Inter Milan in the summer as a replacement for David de Gea, who departed on for free at the end of June.

However, with Onana being from Cameroon, he had decided to represent his team in the upcoming tournament, due to take place between 13 January and 11 February 2024.

This means that Onana will miss at least one match for United, against Tottenham Hotspur on 14 January, and should Cameroon progress all the way to the final, Onana would also miss games against Wolves, West Ham, and Aston Villa.

In his place will almost certainly start Altay Bayındır, who was also signed in the summer for a fee of around £5 million from Turkish side Fenerbahce.

Onana’s decision to play at AFCON has been a long, drawn-out process, with the player initially quitting the national team before returning for a trial run of games in September.

United will also be without Sofyan Amrabat for the duration of the tournament after he was called to represent Morocco.
