Manchester United are set to see one of their players depart in the summer following a disaster performance against Tottenham in the Carabao Cup on Thursday evening.

Manchester United have exited the Carabao Cup in heartbreaking fashion after a thrilling 4-3 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in the quarter-finals, with Rúben Amorim’s men unable to complete a dramatic comeback in North London.

United started the match with promise but struggled to handle Tottenham’s energy. A costly rebound from Altay Bayındır allowed Dominic Solanke to tap in the opener, putting the hosts ahead midway through the first half.

After the break, Ange Postecoglou’s side struck quickly as Dejan Kulusevski found the net to double Spurs’ lead, and Solanke added a third shortly after, leaving United with a mountain to climb.

The visitors showed resilience, with Bruno Fernandes providing a clever assist for Joshua Zirkzee to get one back. Moments later, Amad Diallo’s clinical finish brought United within touching distance, making it 3-2 with 20 minutes to go.

Despite their momentum, United were left fuming when Son Heung-min scored directly from a corner, a goal surrounded by controversy as Bayındır argued he was impeded.

Jonny Evans headed home a late consolation in added time, but it wasn’t enough to prevent a frustrating exit for Amorim’s side, who must now shift their focus back to domestic and European challenges.

Bayındır had a disaster performance vs Spurs

Against the North London side, Amorim chose to field a few of his weaker players, with goalkeeper Bayındır, Christian Eriksen, and Antony all being handed starts, among others.

However, none of this trio impressed on the night, with the shot-stopper having an abysmal performance.

The Turkish international was only receiving his second season start, filling in for André Onana. He failed to replicate the first-choice goalkeeper’s style, completing only 17 of his 28 passes (61% accuracy), just two of his 12 attempted long balls, and only 38 touches of the ball.

He also had one statistical error that directly led to a goal, but in reality, he was at fault for Tottenham’s first and their fourth, with the 26-year-old failing to show dominance in his area as Son scored straight from a corner kick.

He completed just one high claim through the 90 minutes, conceding two goals from a xGOT 2.20 faced.

Bayındır set to leave as club feel he’s “too good”

Bayındır is set to leave the club, with reports from Sky Germany claiming that those within Old Trafford expect the Turkish player to depart in the summer to play first-team football on a regular basis.

It’s claimed that the player is “simply too good” to remain a second-choice goalkeeper behind Onana and has no current prospects for regular playing time.

Internally, it’s said the club are satisfied with him as a back-up goalkeeper, with Bayındır’s contract valid until 2027.

However, the club are in the market for a new third-choice goalkeeper as Tom Heaton’s contract is up in June 2025, and should Bayındır depart at the same time, they would need to sign two fresh faces.
