As Alejandro Garnacho’s time at the club is seemingly at an end following a public fallout with Ruben Amorim, Chelsea, who have been heavily linked with the winger, have one major obstacle to overcome before making a move.
Following the departure of Marcus Rashford on loan to Barcelona, Manchester United have finally started to move players on the Ruben Amorim deemed surplus to requirements.
The club must now sell a number of these players to fund further summer spending, as it still seeks a new striker and midfielder after paying a combined £127.5 million to bring in Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo.
Alejandro Garnacho is one of the four players expected to leave the club this summer, alongside Tyrell Malacia, Antony, and Jadon Sancho, who have all been left out of United’s pre-season tour to America to train separately from the main group while they find new moves.
The 21-year-old featured 40 times last season under Amorim, and after some hints of a falling out throughout the season after being left out of the squad for the Manchester derby, the relationship fully broke down after the Argentine publicly criticised Amorim’s selection choices after the Europa League final loss to Tottenham Hotspur.
Update on Chelsea’s Garnacho pursuit
Chelsea have once again been active in the transfer window this summer, and ahead of their Champions League campaign, they are reportedly looking to add eight or nine attacking options to their squad to rotate between.
The club have already signed Liam Delap, Jamie Gittens, and Joao Pedro, and have been heavily linked with RB Leipzig’s Xavi Simons, but are still reportedly in for Garnacho, with whom they were first linked in January.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano gave an update on the situation.
“Garnacho to Chelsea is something that won’t happen right away; it’s going to take some time before they enter into that,” the Italian journalist explained.
“Chelsea have to sell players, as they want to find solutions for current players before signing more. Also the valuation will be important. Timing is relaxed. Not at the negotiation stage.”
Chelsea’s have started to make progress on outgoing transfers as of late, with six players having already left the club.
A sale needs to happen soon for both parties
With Manchester United’s 2025/26 Premier League campaign kicking off in six weeks, Amorim will no doubt be keen to see any new signings join United sooner rather than later, as he prepares his side to welcome Arsenal to Old Trafford on the 17th of August.
After getting Rashford’s wages off the books, a sale of Garnacho would certainly free up significant funding for a striker, with their main target reportedly being Benjamin Šeško from RB Leipzig, with Ollie Watkins also being considered.

From Garnacho’s point of view, he will most likely find it hard to establish himself as a starter straight away if he makes the move to Chelsea, owing to the lack of a pre-season, which is extremely valuable as seen by Rashford’s desperation to join Barcelona in time for their tour of Asia, and Cunha and Mbeumo in time for the trip to the United States.
Despite making it clear he wants to leave United and join another Premier League side, leaving his options few and far between, he will also want any potential move to happen quickly so that he has time to embed himself into the side and get up to speed.
