According to a new report from Italy, Alejandro Garnacho’s agents are now working on getting Manchester United to lower their demands ahead of a potential Napoli bid.

Manchester United have entered the 2025 January transfer window during a testing period, having suffered four consecutive defeats across the Premier League and Carabao Cup before the new year.

A resilient 2-2 draw with league leaders Liverpool and a dramatic FA Cup penalty shootout victory over Arsenal have offered a positive start to 2025, easing some of the pressure on the squad and boosting confidence.

Rúben Amorim is now tasked with addressing the team’s pressing weaknesses, including the need for a left-back, a centre-back, a striker, and additional midfield options. However, financial limitations, a legacy of heavy spending during Erik ten Hag’s tenure, have made strengthening the squad a significant challenge.

In response, United are prioritising player sales during the January and summer windows to free up resources and lay the groundwork for a critical rebuild.

Latest on Napoli’s pursuit of Garnacho

Over the last week, there have been many reports linking young United winger Alejandro Garnacho to Napoli.

Manager Antonio Conte is said to be keen to bring him in to replace the departing Khvicha Kvaratskhelia amid claims United are contemplating a sale due to the financial benefits.

According to Italian outlet Gazzetta, United are demanding that Napoli pay around £67 million for the player, but that the Serie A side are only prepared to offer £38 million including bonuses.

In a new update, the report claims that Garnacho’s agents are now working to try to soften United’s position on their fee, but as Gianluca Di Marzio has reported, the club have been unwilling to do so so far.

Gazzetta reports that Garnacho is open to the idea presented to him by Napoli and is drawn by the fact that he would be playing in a stadium named after Diego Maradona, one of the best Argentinian footballers in history.

Garnacho responds to recent rumours

However, the 20-year-old has seemingly made his feelings clear on social media following the week of reports rife about his future.

Against Arsenal, Garnacho registered his second assist in two games, doing the same for Amad’s equalising goal against Liverpool a week earlier.

On Tuesday evening, he took to Instagram to share a post from a United Academy-dedicated account that showed his statistics against top clubs, combined with a message about how Garnacho has lit up Old Trafford during his early years.

Garnacho is clearly a huge fan of playing for United, as this action on social media shows, and Amorim has been quick to praise the player despite his initial struggles in the 39-year-old coach’s system.

“I think players like Garnacho, who want to play open, playing inside, they need to suffer. I can put them open, but then I will have to change the idea, and then it will take more time,” Amorim said following United’s win over Arsenal.

“I think it is also good for a player with the quality.”
