Alejandro Garnacho in the middle of three-way transfer race, Man Utd could record third-highest ever sale fee

Manchester United could raise their third-highest ever sale fee this summer with Alejandro Garnacho in the middle of a three-way transfer battle.

Manchester United are preparing for a major summer rebuild as they look to reshape the squad in line with Rúben Amorim’s vision. The club plan to generate funds through player sales, focusing on those who no longer fit the demands of the incoming manager.

Victor Lindelöf and Christian Eriksen are both expected to depart when their contracts expire at the end of the season. Neither are in line for renewals as United begin to clear space in the squad.

Players currently out on loan are also set to be moved on. Marcus Rashford, Antony, and Tyrell Malacia are all expected to be made available for transfer, with none likely to feature under Amorim going forward.

Casemiro is another player possibly heading for the exit, as the club shifts towards a younger, more dynamic profile better suited to Amorim’s tactical approach, while his current wage is a significant drain on the club’s resources.

Garnacho in three-way transfer battle

With United needing to raise money, it has been revealed that Amorim and United would be open to selling Alejandro Garnacho this summer to raise funds to sign Matheus Cunha.

With this in mind, three clubs are reportedly gearing up to make attempts to sign the 20-year-old this summer.

According to David Ornstein, Garnacho is on Chelsea’s list of potential wingers this summer, with a more recent report from MailSport confirming he is a target for the London side this summer.

Secondly, Napoli manager Antonio Conte has reportedly made Garnacho a “prime” target this summer as they seek a permanent replacement for Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, following the winger’s departure to Paris Saint-Germain in January.

Finally, reports from back in December stated that La Liga side and Garnacho’s former team, Atletico Madrid, are dreaming of re-signing the Argentina international this summer, with recent claims stating his name is hotting up once again in Madrid.

United could record third-highest ever sale for Garnacho

United have become a club notorious for failing to sell players for their proper values – the club’s fifth-highest ever sale is Dan James, who left United for Leeds United in September 2021.

Their record sale remains Cristiano Ronaldo’s 2009 transfer to Real Madrid for £80 million. However, the sales of many players, especially those from the Academy, often result in fees much lower than many fans feel they should have been.

However, in the case of Garnacho, the club may be able to break into the top three of their own record at the club. Reports have stated that United will be looking for at least £50 million for the player this summer, and with three clubs already interested, this figure could rise.

With United’s second-highest ever sale being Romelu Lukaku to Inter Milan for £73 million in 2019 and third being Angel di Maria’s PSG transfer for £44 million, Garnacho’s potential sale would likely slot in as the new third-highest ever sale out of Old Trafford.
