Argentina have fierce competition for Alejandro Garnacho’s international duties as Spain are eager to have Manchester United’s starlet join their senior squad.

The tricky 18-year-old winger was snubbed by Lionel Scaloni and his entourage in their Qatar World Cup squad selection, despite being called into senior international action last season.

At just 17, Garnacho was still yet to feature at senior club level but still managed to gain the attention of Argentina boss Scaloni.

His dual nationality, thanks to his mother, means that a switch from the World Cup-winning side Argentina to Spain is still on the cards. Born in Madrid, Garnacho has spent most of his living years in Spain and is a product of Atletico Madrid’s youth system.

Garnacho was swiftly thrown into senior domestic football at Manchester United and won the hearts of the Old Trafford faithful with his tenacity and dazzling nature with the ball.

Erik ten Hag has utilised Garnacho as a regular in the first team this season and a new contract is the next step in boosting his career to the heights it’s destined to reach.

His outside chances of some game time in Qatar were amplified when Argentina were struck with two last-minute injury woes.

It was Atlanta United’s Thiago Almada, however, who received the highly anticipated phone call instead. The youngster was left disappointed and raised the question of whether a return to the Spanish national team set-up would be the right call.

The nation is building a new generation of Spanish talent with stars such as Pedri and Gavi already key parts of his masterplan, and Garnacho may be the final piece of the puzzle should he wish to make the switch, according to a report from The Mirror.

With two Euro 2024 qualifiers just around the corner against Norway and Scotland, Luis de la Fuente would feel more than inclined to include Garnacho in his plans. Spanish officials would welcome him with open arms as his emergence of talent fits their model.
