Rúben Amorim has made a statement surrounding the transfer of his Manchester United players as Chelsea enquires about the availability of Alejandro Garnacho.

Manchester United have entered the 2025 January transfer window during a challenging period, following four consecutive defeats in the Premier League and Carabao Cup before the new year.

A hard-earned 2-2 draw with league leaders Liverpool and a penalty shootout victory over Arsenal in the FA Cup have provided a welcome boost in early 2025, easing some of the pressure on the squad and raising spirits.

Rúben Amorim is tasked with addressing key weaknesses in the squad, including the need for a left-back, a centre-back, a striker, and additional midfield options. However, financial limitations, exacerbated by heavy spending under Erik ten Hag, have made significant reinforcements a difficult prospect.

In response, United are focusing on offloading players in January and the summer to generate funds and lay the groundwork for a much-needed rebuild.

Chelsea launch Garnacho enquiry

One of the most-talked about players in the last week has been Alejandro Garnacho, who is subject to intense interest from Napoli.

According to various records, the Serie A side submitted a bid of around £40 million for the player earlier this week, but it was rejected as United are looking for upwards of £60 million.

While Napoli’s interest seems to have cooled, The Athletic have now reported that Premier League rivals Chelsea have now entered the conversation, too.

It is said that the London outfit have inquired about the 20-year-old winger, as well as for reported United target Jamie Gittens of Borussia Dortmund as they assess their attacking options.

However, it’s pointed out that any conversations surrounding a potential move to Chelsea for Garnacho remain in the initial stages, with no formal offers having been launched.

Amorim makes transfer statement

This comes amid a fresh statement surrounding transfers from Amorim, who confirmed to the press on Thursday evening that he wants to keep the players he currently has at United.

“I want to keep my players, I’m focused on these players,” Amorim explained. “I don’t know what is going to happen in this window, we’ll see.

“But they are our players, so we have control on that. We decide on that. Sometimes it’s harder for the players because they have some information, and you can feel it in every team. It’s like that.”

It was suggested to Amorim that the transfer window may have become a distraction for him due to the uncertainty that surrounds so many of his players.

He replied: “For me, it’s harder to prepare for the game when we lose. When we win, we can manage everything, expectations, the bad mood for some players. We’ll prepare the game in the same way and just focus on the next game.”
