Alan Shearer says Man Utd ace must ‘do better’, but it’s ‘perfect’ star who could be about to shine

Alan Shearer has explained he feels one of Rúben Amorim’s Manchester United stars should be doing better, although another may be about to break out.

With the November international break wrapping up, Rúben Amorim is now focused on preparing Manchester United for their Monday evening fixture against Everton.

United sit seventh in the Premier League, sharing the same points total as Tottenham in fifth. They trail Sunderland by a single point in fourth and Chelsea by two points in third.

Although the team opened the season poorly, they have begun to find form. United are unbeaten in their last five matches and have lost only once in their previous seven, signalling an upward trend in their league position.

Everton, meanwhile, are 13th and have produced two wins, two losses, and a draw from their last five outings. Their 2–0 defeat to Fulham before the break has not shaken the confidence of David Moyes’ squad as they prepare for their trip to Old Trafford.

Shearer believes Šeško must be doing better

Former Blackburn Rovers and Newcastle United striker Alan Shearer holds the record for the most Premier League goals of all time, with 260 to his name. So he knows a thing or two about forwards.

Speaking to BetFair, he was asked for his assessment of United’s current situation, and he took the time to single out new striker Benjamin Šeško, who has had a mixed start to life at Old Trafford with just two goals and one assist to his name.

“One player that must do better is Benjamin Šeško,” the 55-year-old said. “I guess, after the £70-odd million they paid for him. That was a lot of money, it was too much, but that’s the market. He’s had a tough start. I don’t expect huge things from him though, no.

“I think he’s a good player, not sure he’s any more than that. I guess he came on at the weekend and had two really good chances, should have put at least one of them away. It’s been a tough start for him with the money that they’ve paid.”

It’s Mount who could be about to shine

Shearer’s words are harsh. Despite the lack of goals so far, the 22-year-old has put in some fantastic performances. Beyond this, he has just suffered a knee injury, which could rule him out for up to five fixtures at the beginning of the festive season schedule.

With Šeško not set to play in at least the upcoming games against Everton, Crystal Palace, and West Ham, the United boss could use the space to launch Mason Mount back in the starting XI.

Amorim has not been coy in stating previously that he sees Mount as a ‘perfect‘ player, and with Matheus Cunha the most likely option to take up the striker position in Šeško’s absence, there is an ideal space to slot Mount back into the starting XI on the left flank.

For United’s first three games of the season, it was Mount who started alongside Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo in the front three while Šeško warmed up to his new surroundings, and the Englishman was fantastic.

While Joshua Zirkzee could be disappointed that, even with Šeško unavailable, he still doesn’t make the starting XI, it’s hard to justify not playing Mount over the Dutchman given the former’s clear suitability for the system.
