Premier League legend Alan Shearer has explained three benefits there are from Ruben Amorim’s switch of formation at Manchester United.
Manchester United’s Premier League campaign has been inconsistent so far. After 16 matches, they sit sixth in the standings, having let slip a number of points they should have secured.
Ruben Amorim is starting to see positive signs, with Matthijs de Ligt and Bryan Mbeumo among those to showcase some impressive performances.
The United boss has also adjusted his tactics, with the Reds looking like a four-at-the-back during the 4-4 draw against Bournemouth last week.
It is a change that is expected to stay for the coming weeks, and many fans are interested to see how the team will perform following criticism of the three-at-the-back formation.
Shearer explains three benefits from Amorim’s formation switch
Alan Shearer has been discussing Amorim’s formation tweak in an interview with Betfair and he believes there are three key positives from the change.
The ex-Newcastle striker thought that United were ‘much better’ against Bournemouth even though they didn’t win. He claims that the Reds have more energy, belief and understanding after Amorim’s tactical change.
“Amorim has been so stubborn, adamant that he’s never changing that system, but he tweaked it last week and there’s no doubt Man United were much better in terms of energy, belief and understanding of what they were trying to do,” Shearer said.
“I know they were poor defensively in the 4-4 draw against Bournemouth, but in terms of bringing different things to the game, they were a lot better, and it was one of the games of the season.
“So, despite all his frustrations and reluctance to change, he did and it worked. Let’s see what he does this weekend.”
United’s change is understandable
United have almost never had good performances under Amorim without Amad at right wingback. Two defensive-minded players on the flanks in that formation is a recipe for disaster.
With the Ivorian now at AFCON for several weeks, it is understandable that United would change things and Amorim will hope that the adjustment works.
It is also something that could benefit several players, such as Kobbie Mainoo, who could start in a midfield three for the Reds. The fullbacks will also likely be more comfortable with less attacking responsibilities.
