Ajax have informed Erik ten Hag that he is welcome to rejoin the Eredivisie club this summer if he leaves Manchester United, with a deadline for his acceptance set.

Erik ten Hag‘s future as Manchester United manager is unknown at this moment. Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS are unsure if they want to keep the Dutch manager on for another season as they make wholesale changes to the club’s staff.

After poor campaigns across the Champions League, Premier League, and Carabao Cup this season, the FA Cup remains the club’s only route to glory for 2023/24, which has meant a large portion of fans have called for the manager to be sacked.

With the rumours rife, there have been increasingly strong links between Ten Hag and his former club, Ajax, whom he departed in 2022 to join United after winning three league titles in a row.

Now, there have been claims that Ajax is becoming a “great escape route” for Ten Hag this summer as INEOS weigh up their options.

“There is a great escape route for Manchester United and Erik ten Hag,” Dutch journalist Marcel van der Kraan said on Trans Europe Express.

“Ajax have had a dreadful season – they’ve had three managers, they’ve sacked the technical director, Sven Mislintat, they’ve sacked the CEO and brought him back… they’ve sacked almost everyone they can think of, and it’s been really dire.

“The CEO, the big man who was sacked only two weeks ago for suspected insider trading because he allegedly bought shares just before he was appointed, is back on the scene as of Friday afternoon.

“Alex Kroes, who started SEG (Sports Entertainment Group), looks after Erik ten Hag; they have done this for many years. This Alex Kroes is the new technical director of Ajax.”

However, the Dutch journalist then reveals that a deadline has been set for a decision. Should Ten Hag rejoin Ajax, he must either be sacked or choose to leave United by 1 June – just five days after United play Manchester City in the FA Cup final.

“Alex Kroes has got Erik ten Hag at the top of his wanted list. He is his man, and (he) will wait for him until the end of this month because, by June 1st, they have to appoint a manager or make a decision.

“He’s prepared to wait another month to see if Erik ten Hag will take the job on June 1st.

“Why until the end of May? Because on May 25th, it’s the FA Cup final, and Ten Hag will not want to be disturbed with that question.”

Finally, Van der Kraan revealed that Ten Hag has already been informed that he can leave United to join Ajax, who would welcome him back with open arms.

“But he knows about it; he knows there’s an open door at Ajax, and he can be the manager of Ajax next season and try and win a title there again.”
