Manchester United starlet continues to struggle on loan, Rúben Amorim will be very concerned

Rúben Amorim will be hoping one Manchester United loanee can improve soon after a poor start to the season for his new club.

Manchester United’s loan department, now led by Jonny Evans, appears to have had an impressive summer, as many young players are out on loan, gaining good experience, while some remain at the club waiting for an opportunity.

The African Cup of Nations could help provide debuts for some of Carrington’s most exciting youngsters. Amad, Bryan Mbeumo and Noussair Mazraoui will all be unavailable from the 21st of December due to the competition, leaving first-team spots for some under-21 stars.

While United’s loanees won’t be able to fill in for the AFCON players, they are playing regular football and developing away from Old Trafford before returning in the summer for pre-season.

Harry Amass and Radek Vitek are the standouts this season. Both are in the Championship – for Sheffield Wednesday and Bristol City, respectively – and have been brilliant in England’s most competitive league.

Ethan Williams is another to shine on loan from United. The versatile wide player has scored one goal and assisted three in the Scottish top flight this season. But not all of United’s loan players are impressing.

Collyer continues West Brom struggles

Toby Collyer joined West Bromwich Albion for the 2025/26 season, following his 13 appearances for Rúben Amorim’s senior side last season.

While Collyer has shown glimpses of his true ability at Old Trafford, he has failed to do so at West Brom. Since joining the club, he has made just two starts in his 11 appearances, leading to just 242 minutes in the Championship.

He did suffer a muscle injury against Preston North End after picking up an assist in the first half, but returned to action against Oxford United.

On Saturday, West Brom took on Coventry City, with Collyer again stuck on the bench, despite two weeks of full training during the international break. Clearly, he isn’t showing enough to earn a starting place just yet.

Amorim will be very disappointed with Collyer’s start on loan, as he has the right physical attributes to play in his midfield. But if he can’t improve soon, United may look for a replacement, rather than trusting in the former Brighton youngster.

United likely to sell this summer

If Collyer wants to stay at Old Trafford next season, he must be playing week in, week out for West Brom and look like one of the better players in the division, like Amass and Vitek.

As it stands, United are more likely to sell Collyer than keep him, as interest won’t be low. His time in the Brighton academy alone will attract suitors from the Championship and the Premier League.

United are already eyeing more midfielders, so Collyer must improve soon. Dan Gore and Jack Moorhouse are both on loan in League One, and they are more likely to push for a senior spot next season because they are playing every week.

Perhaps, if Collyer can’t become a regular player for West Brom, United will recall him in January and loan him to another side.
