Rúben Amorim has responded to rumours about Alejandro Garnacho’s Manchester United future after the player made some strong comments after the Europa League final.
Alejandro Garnacho’s Manchester United future is in serious doubt this summer after he has failed to adapt to life under Rúben Amorim.
Garnacho was a terror from the left and right flanks under Erik ten Hag, lighting up the Premier League and Old Trafford with fantastic performances as a teenager, but once the Dutchman was sacked in October 2024, his future at United came into question.
He was targetted intesnly by Napoli in the January transfer window as a replacement for Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, but a deal never went through, and he has since improved playing on the flank’s of Amorim’s attacking line.
However, with United in need of funds this summer and Garnacho himself refusing to publicly commit his future to the club, there is an increasing feeling of unease surrounding his future at Old Trafford.
What did Garnacho say after the Europa League final?
Garnacho played a big part in United’s route to the Europa League final, but on the night, he was only afforded 20 minutes off the bench, with the player making his upset at his lack of involvement known.
“I played every round to help the team reach the final, and today I only got 20 minutes,” the Argentine told the media when asked about his future. “I don’t know. I will try to enjoy the summer and then see what happens.”
Subsequently, reports flooded out of English media that the player was unhappy with how Amorim handled his involvement in the final, his general role under the head coach as a wide attacking midfielder, and the instability at the club as a whole.
It has also been claimed that the player’s representatives are set to sit down with United in the coming days to discuss his future, with it becoming an ‘increasingly likely’ scenario that he is sold this summer amid United adding him to the transfer list for as much as £60 million.
How has Amorim reacted to the Garnacho news?
Speaking on Saturday afternoon, Amorim was staunch in his stance that anything that happened during the Europa League final has not changed his mind about his players.
“No, what changes is one less competition, that game in the middle of the week,” Amorim replied when asked if the performances and comments of players during the final had changed his mind on any of those in his squad.
“You can manage the squad in a different way, so that rotation of the players, the depth of the squad, that changes completely if you have three or four competitions.
“That changes a little bit the plan, but not the way I look at my players just by looking at the final.”
