Former Barcelona player and manager Xavi Hernandez has issued a truthful verdict on the job Ruben Amorim is doing at Manchester United.
Manchester United decided to sack Erik ten Hag earlier this season and Ruben Amorim was appointed as his replacement in November last year.
The club’s chiefs had decided that the Portuguese boss was the best man to take the club forward although there have been major difficulties so far.
Amorim has experienced a dreadful Premier League campaign that leaves United in the bottom half of the table and winning the Europa League is his only hope of getting some success this term.
Xavi Hernandez was among the managers linked with the managerial role at Old Trafford before Amorim took charge. The Spaniard is currently unemployed after being sacked by Barcelona last year.
Xavi issues truthful verdict on Amorim at United
Xavi was a top player and his managerial career in Europe started well after winning La Liga in his first full season in charge of the Catalan club.
Despite his previous links with the United job, the 45-year-old has supported the work Amorim is doing at the club. Xavi believes that it is “so important” to see the United player fighting for the head coach even in these difficult moments.
“I know Manchester United has a difficult year, but I can see what Ruben Amorim is trying to do,” explained Xavi during an interview with The Athletic.
“He’s at the start of his project, but I see one thing, that the players are fighting for him. And that is so important. They run for the team.”
Xavi outlines Premier League ambitions
Xavi might be out of work currently but the World Cup winner is expected to return to the managerial merry-go-round and he has explained how he would like to manage in England.
The former midfielder says that he loves the “passion” in the Premier League but also suggests that he could take up a role for a national team.
“There’s no hurry for me, but I’d like a good project. Like, ‘You have four years to work and make a project’. I’d love to work in the Premier League because I love the passion there. In Spain, it’s too much about the result,” he continued.
“Or a national team, that would appeal. When I dreamed about being a coach, I dreamed about being in a World Cup or European Championship.
“[The Spain job?] Why not in the future? Or another one. I’m not anxious. I don’t have an obsession where I need to work. I’m calm watching football, being with my family.”
While Xavi did not end up being the manager of United, it seems like they could end up facing up against him in the Premier League soon.
