Wout Weghorst revealed that Manchester United ‘were not happy’ with their first-half performance against Nottingham Forest on Wednesday evening.

The on-loan forward scored his first goal for the club minutes before the interval to give Erik ten Hag’s men a 2-0 lead after an early opener from Marcus Rashford in the Carabao Cup bout.

Despite this, The Reds were fortunate that VAR was introduced to the competition for the semi-finals after Sam Surridge’s goal was ruled out for offside.

United were dangerous in attacking zones but their sloppiness in possession often gifted Forest dangerous counter-attacking situations that they failed to capitalise on.

In the second half, it was more comfortable for United. They scored a third in the late stages of the game through Bruno Fernandes which all but sealed their place in the final.

“We were not happy,” Weghorst told Sky Sports after the game. “Of course the score, at the time, was good, but we were not happy with the way that we had played, as I said.

“We wanted to have more control and that was definitely something we needed to do. We wanted to make it our game and be more patient with the ball. That is something that we did in the second half, controlling the game and with it being 3-0 at the end it made it an even better result.”

The Dutch striker has impressed since he joined the club, with Lisandro Martinez praising his impact on the training pitch.

After scoring his first goal for the club, Weghorst detailed his excitement about getting off the mark.

“It is always special and you always want to score goals. You would prefer to have this first one, of course, as quick as possible,” added Weghorst.

“I am really happy and I think it was a really important moment [in the game], also. It gave us a way better feeling in the break.”
