Wout Weghorst determined to add goals to Manchester United
The ongoing January transfer window has seen Erik ten Hag add another hardworking and hungry character to his much-improving Manchester United squad.
Loan signing Wout Weghorst spoke to the official club website upon signing for United, with the 30-year-old previously failing to leave a mark in his first stint in the Premier League at current Championship club Burnley, where he scored just two goals in 20 appearances.
This season however, Weghorst netted eight times in 16 Turkish Super Lig appearances at Besiktas, and the Dutchman is hoping to add to his numbers at Old Trafford.
Weghorst said: “For me, it [playing in the Premier League] was not done. It was not finished. It didn’t work out the first time as I hoped and I’m really hungry to show myself, to help the team.”
The 6’6” forward also scored two crucial goals in the World Cup quarter-final for his native Netherlands against Argentina, showing he certainly knows where the back of the net is.
Speaking on the Reds’ current run of form, Weghorst said: “We are on a really good track now. The last couple of weeks, months actually, it’s going really positive here and I just want to contribute and give my best and give my all for the club and I try to be a part of the successful way we are going.”
Goals have been a struggle for United this season, with Anthony Martial and Antony joint-second in the goalscoring charts with five goals, 11 behind top scorer Marcus Rashford.
Weghorst is determined to score goals in Red.
“I want to score goals here,” he added.
“I’m a striker and I think every striker knows it; you are living for scoring goals.”
Many may argue that the central striking position is still up for grabs, with Martial hardly setting the world alight after sustaining a number of injuries throughout this season, so seeing Weghorst become a consistent starter would come as no surprise to anyone.
