Luke Shaw has made a very bold claim in a recent interview about what Manchester United can achieve next season, whilst also discussing his best position in Ruben Amorim’s system.
Manchester United suffered terribly last season, both on and off the pitch, with injuries being at the heart of an incredibly difficult season for the club.
Saying this, nobody suffered more than Luke Shaw, who has been plagued by injury for the vast majority of his career as a Red devil, much to the frustration of the fans.
Both Shaw and Ruben Amorim will be optimistic that these issues can be put behind not only the English left-back but the team as a whole, as they strive for bigger things in the next Premier League season.
With new signings in Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo now amongst the squad, Shaw was asked in an interview as to how optimistic he is about the upcoming campaign, and where he thinks he’ll be able to best contribute.
Shaw on his best position
In an interview with The United Stand on YouTube, the 30-year-old was asked about where he could play for Amorim, as he has experience playing both as a left wing-back and left centre-back.
Shaw replied, saying, “I honestly don’t mind. Obviously, I played left wing back before for England and stuff, and you know, back in the days with Ole [Gunnar Solskjaer], so I know that position well, but you know, for me, it’s about what the manager wants and what the team needs.
“Wherever the manager puts me, um, you know, as long as I can stay fit, I’ll always give everything I can for the team. And, I feel like that’s what I’ve always done.”
With Amorim operating his side in an unorthodox 3-4-2-1 system, it allows Shaw two possible positions in the side, although neither of which are his traditional left-back spot that he has so often starred in for United.
Shaw’s aspirations for United
Later in the interview, Shaw spoke about the vibe around the United camp, as well as how he felt personally ahead of the next season.
He said, “Personally, for me, I think I can’t be any worse than last season. I was so low last season, so I think anything but that is, you know, I feel good.
“I think especially this preseason, obviously, I didn’t have a preseason last season either, so I think it’s really benefiting me to be able to just be fit and train with the team and get minutes, and I’m really enjoying that.
“Like I said, aims-wise, I think the aim has to be winning the Premier League. I know people will be questioning me for saying it after last season, but it has to be that. It’s not just me who thinks that.
“I’m sure the whole team, if you ask them, they all have the same aims. Even the manager, I’m sure he probably wouldn’t say it in the press, but we all have to have the same beliefs and ambitions, and like I said, that real family sort of feeling together and all strive for the same thing.”
