Former Manchester United star Willy Kambwala has sent a supportive message to one of his ex-teammates after a “disappointing” claim.
Manchester United have failed to provide many positives for their fans in recent years and a lot of the excitement has come through the young players coming into the squad.
Even when they won the FA Cup final last term, it was two teenagers from the club’s Academy – Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo – who scored the goals.
Another youngster in the squad that day was Willy Kambwala, who was named on the bench after Casemiro pulled out with an injury ahead of the game.
Kambwala made 10 appearances for the first-team last term after breaking through into a injury-filled squad. He was regarded as a top talent when he joined the club in 2020 but injury issues interrupted his development.
Despite playing a handful of games, it was decided that the 20-year-old centre-back would be best off elsewhere and United sold him to Villarreal in the most recent summer window for around £10 million.
Kambwala sends message to Amass after “disappointing” claim
One of Kambwala’s former teammates and fellow defender Harry Amass made his first start for the club on the weekend as he played 55 minutes of United’s 4-1 defeat to Newcastle.
Although it was an embarrassing loss for the Reds, the performance of Amass was actually one of the small positives to take from the game. It is a cliché, but he didn’t look out of place.
The 18-year-old will be hoping to get more opportunities going forward and took to Instagram after the game to react to his first start in the professional game.
“Disappointing result but happy to get my first start ❤️,” Amass wrote on his social media page and several United stars, including Chido Obi and Shea Lacey replied in the comments section.
They were also joined by Kambwala, who knows exactly the feeling to start for United, who wrote: “Congrats brother proud of you ❤️”.
Amass won’t have the same fate as Kambwala
The decision to sell Kambwala was met with acceptance from most United fans as there were no guarantees that he would get minutes when the defensive unit were fully fit.
However, it seems unlikely that Amass will have the same fate. His technical ability is superb and it translates to first-team football, as shown during moments against the Magpies.
The main concern about Amass has been about physicality but it didn’t seem to be much of an issue against the in-form Jacob Murphy on the weekend.
His display was certainly one of promise and he will be hoping that he has convinced Ruben Amorim to give him more chances before the end of the season.
