Why Matthijs de Ligt isn’t in Manchester United’s squad vs Spurs as team confirmed
Matthijs de Ligt was missing from the Manchester United squad after Ruben Amorim’s team was confirmed for the Carabao Cup clash.
After their dramatic 2-1 comeback win against Manchester City on the weekend, Manchester United turn their attention to the Carabao Cup.
The Reds have been full of goals in the competition so far this season, scoring seven in the third-round against Barnsley and five against Leicester City after that.
Now, Ruben Amorim’s side have a quarter-final against Tottenham Hotspur away from home and it will be another difficult clash.
United lost 3-0 to Spurs at Old Trafford in their opening encounter this season in the Premier League under previous manager Erik ten Hag.
Amorim’s side will be desperate to inflict revenge on Ange Postecoglou’s side, who have shown major inconsistencies this term.
The winner of this tie will face up against Arsenal, Newcastle or Liverpool in the semi-finals and the Reds will be eyeing a third season in a row with silverware for the first time since 2009-2011.
Why Matthijs de Ligt is not in Man Utd squad vs Spurs
Matthijs de Ligt was one of only three players to have started all seven opening fixtures under Amorim so far, alongside Bruno Fernandes and André Onana.
However, the Dutch centre-back was not included in the squad for the game against Spurs despite reports claiming that he travelled to London on Wednesday for the game.
Lisandro Martínez, Victor Lindelöf and Leny Yoro start in the back three for United instead, with Jonny Evans making a return to the squad as well.

It was quickly confirmed ahead of the game that De Ligt’s absence from the squad was due to illness and Amorim is expected to give further updates during his interviews.
United will be eager to secure a victory without their Dutch centre-back, who will hopefully be fit to start against Bournemouth on the weekend.
