Why Matheus Cunha has picked Man Utd over Newcastle as Ruben Amorim ‘inches closer’ to transfer agreement

Matheus Cunha is reportedly inching closer to a move to Manchester United in the upcoming summer transfer window despite interest from other Premier League clubs.

Manchester United have been linked with a move for Matheus Cunha from Wolves ahead of the upcoming summer transfer window — and it’s easy to see why.

The 25-year-old has been a standout performer this season, scoring 14 goals and providing four assists in the Premier League, despite Wolves’ struggles at Molineux.

United’s top scorer in the league, Bruno Fernandes, has managed eight goals, while Rasmus Højlund has only found the net three times in 28 appearances.

While United are in the market for a new striker, they also need added quality in the attacking midfield and support roles behind the number nine. Cunha could be the ideal fit for that need.

The latest reports suggest that transfer is going to happen, with MailSport claiming that an agreement ahead of the summer is ‘inching closer’ between United and Wolves.

Why Cunha picked United over Newcastle

There are many clubs interested in signing Cunha this summer, including Newcastle, but it is looking like he could be at Old Trafford next season instead.

MailSport’s report explains that the Magpies were keen to use Cunha on the left side of their attack but the Brazilian star has been swayed by the prospect of being a crucial part of a squad revamp under Ruben Amorim.

Newcastle currently have Anthony Gordon and Harvey Barnes as options on their left flank while United’s frontline lacks almost any depth.

Alejandro Garnacho is the current starting left-sided attacker but Cunha would likely demote the Argentine to the bench should he join the club.

Amorim and Cunha were briefly spotted speaking with each other in the Old Trafford tunnel during Wolves’ 1-0 win over United on the weekend and the Portuguese coach has made his admiration of the 25-year-old clear.

United hopeful of Cunha agreement next month

Cunha has a release clause in his Wolves contract worth around £62.5 million – a price-tag which would see the forward become the most expensive signing since INEOS took charge at Old Trafford.

The aforementioned report stated that the club are hopeful of having terms for a deal in place by next month ahead of the summer window.

There have been seven first-team signings in the last two transfer windows and the £52 million spent on Leny Yoro is the most spent on a single player so far.

It is clear that Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the United chiefs want to make smarter signings than the club have in recent years but it’s impossible to build a good enough squad without splashing the cash on certain players and Cunha appears to be one of them.
