Manchester United are attempting to sign Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford this summer but are taking their time to submit their second bid for the player.
Manchester United kicked off the summer transfer window with a bang, confirming a deal for Matheus Cunha from Wolves before submitting an opening bid for Bryan Mbeumo.
In a further boost for the club, captain Bruno Fernandes has confirmed he will stay at Old Trafford this summer, opting to reject a lucrative offer from Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal.
With Cunha now on board and Fernandes committed to the project, United have turned their focus to Mbeumo, who is reportedly keen on joining Ruben Amorim’s squad.
The Red Devils submitted an opening bid worth £45 million, with an additional £10 million in performance-related add-ons, for the Cameroon forward. However, Brentford turned that down quickly.
It has been reported that United are planning to provide a second offer which reaches a £60 million package although there are no suggestions that this bid has been placed yet.
Why United haven’t submitted second Mbeumo bid
There has been some concern amongst fans that it is taking so long for United to submit their second bid for Mbeumo, especially with Thomas Frank set to take over at Tottenham Hotspur.
However, there is a clear reason for United taking their time, with the club trying to make sure that this next offer is accepted by their Premier League counterparts.
MailSport reporter Nathan Salt has explained that United “don’t want to get dragged into [making] bid after bid” for Mbeumo and do not want to ‘get fleeced’ in terms of the fee.
He added that United remain calm about the situation and are eager for this second offer to be accepted, with the player still wanting the move to Old Trafford.
United need to strike a balance with transfers
There is a balance that United need to try and strike this summer. We all love to see the club acting quickly and getting signings over the line within days, but they also need to be smart.
Cunha was able to be done quickly due to the release clause so it was always going to take longer to bring in someone like Mbeumo.
The player has given United a huge boost by communicating his desire to join and it still feels like a matter of time until a deal happens.
It will be interesting to know the final figure when that happens, and we will see whether United’s meticulous planning ahead of this second bid was worthwhile.
