Why Manchester United have delayed official Matheus Cunha transfer unveiling and when photos will be released

Manchester United have been forced to delay the official unveiling of Matheus Cunha as Rúben Amorim’s agreement for the first summer signing has been confirmed.

Manchester United have confirmed the signing of Matheus Cunha from Wolverhampton Wanderers on a five-year deal worth £62.5 million.

The Brazilian forward becomes Rúben Amorim’s first signing and represents a major step in strengthening United’s squad early in the summer window.

Cunha is seen as a key addition to a front line that has struggled throughout the season. His pace, movement, and versatility are expected to inject new life into United’s attack and offer more tactical flexibility.

The transfer fee will be paid in three instalments, beginning with an initial £20.8 million upon completion of the move. The remaining payments will be spread out over the next year.

Cunha, 26, is expected to take the left-wing role in United’s front three, overtaking Alejandro Garnacho, whose future at the club appears increasingly uncertain with interest mounting from abroad.

Why has Cunha’s transfer unveiling been delayed?

Usually, when United announce a transfer, they often do so with a flourish of photos, statements, and an opening interview with their new player once the medical and accompanying media duties have been completed.

The club do sometimes choose to announce that they have struck an agreement with a player’s club, subject to medical checks and personal terms.

However, in the case of Cunha, United confirmed that the only remaining details were Cunha’s visa and registration, suggesting that his medical and personal terms had already been finalised and agreed upon.

In the case of Cunha, United correspondent Laurie Whitwell from The Athletic has confirmed that, due to the 26-year-old being called up to the Brazilian national side for their upcoming fixtures against Ecuador and Paraguay across the next two weeks, he will not undergo his official confirmation and signing until after he returns.

This makes it likely that United will delay Cunha’s unveiling in red for the first time following his return to England in two weeks’ time.

Other signings could be unveiled before Cunha

With United wanting to act quickly in the summer market and ensure their major deals are not dragged out toward the end of the summer window, there is a definite chance that United’s first unveiling could come before Cunha’s.

United are reportedly targeting Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo after losing out on soon-to-be Chelsea striker Liam Delap, and amid a battle with Newcastle for his signature, have already engaged in talks with his entourage.

United signed young Paraguayan left-back Diego Leon earlier this year, but he could not join as he was yet to turn 18. Having reached this age in April, United may confirm his transfer in the coming weeks.

There have also been recent links to Atalanta midfielder Ederson, although both Liverpool and Al-Hilal are reportedly interested in the player, which could prolong a potential move to United.
