“Why could I not…?” – Ruben Amorim told he should be ‘hurt’ by Marcus Rashford’s Barcelona form

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim has been told that he should be ‘hurt’ by the successful form Marcus Rashford is showing at Barcelona.

Manchester United have had a poor start to the new season and it already feels like Ruben Amorim is under immense pressure again.

The Reds have won just two of their opening seven games and were embarrassed in their latest outing against Brentford on the weekend.

Meanwhile, Marcus Rashford is enjoying success at Barcelona following his summer loan move to the Spanish giants.

After a slow start, Rashford has registered assists in four consecutive La Liga games, and also scored an incredible brace to win over Newcastle in the Champions League.

Amorim told he should be ‘hurt’ by Rashford’s form at Barcelona

Amorim and Rashford clashed early on in the Portuguese boss’ time at Old Trafford and he was initially sent on loan to Aston Villa after being frozen out of the squad.

The winger’s success is now something that will ‘hurt’ Amorim, according to Arsenal legend Martin Keown, who believes that the United boss should be asking himself questions about the situation.

“The money that’s being wasted… if you’re the manager that comes in, there’s a responsibility,” the ex-defender said on BBC Sport.

“You see Rashford go to Barcelona, I’m the manager, and he performs like that at another club, I’m hurt by that. Why could I not bring out that ability in him? Why do we have to shove him over to Barcelona? I want that at my club.

“It seems like anyone with any real creativity, Garnacho, OK there’s problems with these players, Sancho was allowed to leave before. Anyone with any real ability, sorry you don’t fit into my structure, but if the structure isn’t well understood and carried out, it all falls down.”

Rashford needed a new challenge

Rashford remains a controversial figure among United supporters. While many believe he was unfairly treated and one of the most talented players at the club, others accused him of lacking effort and quality.

As with all things, the truth is somewhere in between and a move seemed inevitable for Rashford even before Amorim’s arrival. Sometimes you need a new environment and challenge.

But as with Scott McTominay, if someone leaves United and succeeds, you better well hope that their replacements are doing well at Old Trafford.

Manuel Ugarte’s failures have made the exit of McTominay even worse. The addition of Matheus Cunha feels like one that will succeed eventually, even if it might not be under Amorim.

It is a good thing that Rashford is enjoying his football and finding form in Spain. But even though he is only on loan, it feels inevitable that his Old Trafford journey is over.
