“Where is…” Paul Scholes slams Manchester United star vs Everton, but he completely misses the point

Paul Scholes has slammed one Manchester United player for his performance against Everton but has completely missed a key point surrounding Rúben Amorim.
Manchester United battled back from two goals down to earn a 2-2 draw against Everton, with Bruno Fernandes and Manuel Ugarte rescuing a point for Rúben Amorim’s side at Goodison Park.
Everton dominated early on, pressing United into mistakes. Beto capitalised after 20 minutes, punishing poor defending to score his fifth goal in four games. Ten minutes later, Abdoulaye Doucouré doubled the lead, overpowering Harry Maguire to finish after André Onana’s save.
United improved after the break but remained second-best until Fernandes curled in a superb free kick with 20 minutes left. Soon after, Ugarte struck brilliantly from distance to level the score.
Late drama saw Matthijs de Ligt concede a penalty for bringing down Ashley Young, but VAR overturned the decision, ensuring United escaped with a hard-earned point.
Scholes slams Fernandes for Everton performance
Speaking on The Overlap, former United midfielder Paul Scholes chose to zero in on Bruno Fernandes amid slamming the club’s display at Goodison Park.
The 50-year-old explained that although United played well in the final 20 minutes of the game, he felt that Fernandes and his team disappeared for the other 70 minutes.
“You talk about the last 20 minutes were really good and showing braveness… People rave about it, the last 20 minutes, ‘oh yeah, they were brilliant and showed great character’. You’ve got to do that in the first 20 minutes,” Scholes said.
“Everton was like, not the good old days, but it was hostile, the players were great, the energy of the crowd were on top of them. Where are you then? Where is Bruno Fernandes then?
“That’s when you win your games of football, because you get to 60 minutes, and you know Everton, they’ve flown about everywhere, they’ve got to be wrecked, they’ve got to be knackered.
“And even if you just keep it nil-nil by being brave, keeping possession away from them, maybe scoring a goal, then that last half an hour at Goodison, that’s when you win the game, as they’ve shown. But they haven’t got the balls, they haven’t got the bollocks to do that in the first 20 minutes, half an hour.”
Scholes has missed a key point
When talking about the Everton performance and specifically about Fernandes, Scholes has completely ignored the chances made by Amorim to incite United’s comeback.
With around 30 minutes left on the clock, the head coach chose to trade Casemiro for Alejandro Garnacho and play Fernandes in a deeper position, which allowed the Portuguese international to see more of the ball and influence the game more often.
Fernandes went on to score a wonderful free kick and carry his team back into a drawing position, and he was rightly awarded the Player of the Match award.
Scholes, for all his talk about Amorim refusing to change his system and principles and failing to adapt to the squad he has at Old Trafford, has ignored that, in the Everton game, the 40-year-old made the correct changes to salvage a point after individual errors cost his side in the first half.
