Luke Shaw has sustained an injury during pre-season which will keep him out of the opening games of the new campaign for Manchester United.

Shaw, 29, missed the second half of last season with an injury. The United defender managed to get back to full fitness during Euro 2024.

Despite not having played in the group stage, Shaw helped England in the knockout stages before their eventual elimination in the final against Spain.

It was hoped that the defender, who is well known for his injury troubles, would simply be getting useful fitness in Germany before coming back to United for pre-season.

He returned to Carrington after the pre-season tour alongside other players who competed at the European Championships.

However, it has now been confirmed that he has sustained yet another injury in recent weeks that will keep him out until the Reds return from the first international break of the season.

“Luke Shaw will miss the opening games of the Premier League season due to a calf injury sustained at the start of pre-season training,” a club statement read.

“He is working hard on his rehabilitation with a view to being available after the first international break.”

That comes after the opening three Premier League games against Fulham, Brighton and Liverpool.

Harry Amass is one option to come into the team, although it appears that Erik ten Hag is wary of throwing the 17-year-old into a competitive first-team environment regardless of his impressive pre-season.

Either Diogo Dalot or Noussair Mazraoui, who is expected to be announced as one of United’s latest signings on Wednesday, could also switch across to the left side.

Lisandro Martínez played there in the Community Shield defeat against Manchester City, but Erik ten Hag will likely want the Argentine to return to the centre of defence.

Should his rehabilitation go according to plan, Shaw will be available for United’s trip to newly promoted Southampton on 14 September.
