Chelsea’s obligation to buy Jadon Sancho permanently from Manchester United has been triggered after the latest Premier League results.
In the final days of the 2024 summer transfer window, Jadon Sancho departed Manchester United to join Chelsea on a season-long loan.
The agreement featured a clause allowing Chelsea to make the move permanent the following summer for £25 million. However, later reports revealed the London club can opt out by paying a £5 million fee.
Sancho had previously been sidelined by Erik ten Hag and loaned to Borussia Dortmund. Although he was reintegrated into the United squad in July 2024, his future at the club remained uncertain and he ultimately left the club.
Since arriving at Chelsea, Sancho has made 33 appearances, scoring three and providing 10 assists, but there are still uncertainties over whether he will actually move there permanently.
When Sancho will confirm Sancho decision
When Sancho joined Chelsea in the summer, the obligation for the Stamford Bridge club to sign him permanently rested on their Premier League position in the 2024/25 campaign.
It was stated that as long as they finished above 15th in the table, the obligation would become active.
Ben Jacobs has reported that, after the latest round of Premier League results, Chelsea are now mathematically guaranteed to finish above 15th and so the obligation has “kicked in”.
However, of course, the £5 million fine to back-out of the agreement is still something Chelsea can choose to pay and Jacobs says that a final decision from the Blues will not be taken until the end of the season.
United will want to have confirmation as soon as possible as they look to prepare their own summer transfer window on a modest budget.
Sancho looks likely to stay at Chelsea
All of the information available suggests that Chelsea are going to keep Sancho at the club and that will be a boost for United.
The 25-year-old’s improved form of late could be helping make Chelsea’s mind up after registering four goal contributions in their last four games.

Before that, Sancho had just one assist and zero goals in 21 appearances, a run of form which led to these question marks about his future arising.
For United, the best situation is for Sancho to move to Chelsea in the summer so they can move their focus onto more important priorities.
