What’s happened to Mason Mount? Injury latest explained as Man Utd return timeline given

Mason Mount has missed Manchester United’s last two games after suffering what was said to be a minor knock in training a few weeks ago.

Mason Mount’s time at Manchester United has not gone as well as many would have hoped for following his £50 million move from Chelsea in 2023.

Brought in under Erik ten Hag to provide a new dynamic, flexibility, and challenge to Bruno Fernandes in the creative department, the English midfielder has missed 52 fixtures through injury, essentially ruling him out of an entire season’s worth of football during his three seasons in Red.

While Mount had good bouts of form within Rúben Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 formation, the switch back to a 4-2-3-1 under Michael Carrick has left little room in the starting XI, especially considering the brilliant form of Matheus Cunha and Fernandes of late.

While there is no doubt about Mount’s quality as an individual, many are starting to question where the Champions League winner would fit at United.

Mount injury update and timeline given

It was a bit of a surprise to all when Mount was not included in United’s matchday squad, and Carrick had to clarify he’d taken a knock in training.

Ahead of the win over Tottenham on Saturday, Carrick was asked to expand on the injury. “Probably, Mason [will be available] sooner [than De Ligt],” the United boss explained. “He’s not too far away, really. We’re hopeful it won’t be too long.”

Further, London World have now confirmed that Mount is currently expected to be out for around 10-12 days, which would rule him out of the upcoming trip to face West Ham on Tuesday evening.

Following this report, Carrick gave an update on Mount’s situation. ”Mason will be probably not for Tuesday, but definitely going into the Everton game, he’ll be back,” Carrick said in his pre-match press conference ahead of the West Ham tie.

Is this Mount’s final few months at United?

There are a lot of questions to answer when it comes to the future of United’s midfield. While Casemiro is a confirmed departure at the end of the season, Manuel Ugarte and Fernandes may also depart, depending on their end-of-season talks with the club.

United are already short in midfield as it is, so the club will probably look to sign a midfielder for any and every one that departs, plus an extra on top.

Mount is not a starter for United amid all their quality up front, and if the club lose two or three already in the summer, they may choose to keep him as a depth option, particularly if European football returns to Old Trafford next season.

However, if the likes of Fernandes stay and/or if other attacking midfield options are signed, Mount could find himself heading out the exit door come the end of the season.
