Sekou Kone could be in line to make his Manchester United debut soon after appearing on the bench last weekend against Tottenham Hotspur.

Manchester United had only 12 first-team regulars available, which left Ruben Amorim with a tough challenge in North London, relying heavily on youth due to injuries and illness.

Victor Lindelöf was the only senior substitute, while new signing Ayden Heaven and seven Academy players, including 17-year-old Chido Obi—who made his debut—were also included.

Sekou Kone, who joined from Mali’s Guidars FC last summer for a reported £1 million, was named in his first matchday squad.

Initially set for a gradual integration into Amorim’s plans next season, the 18-year-old was called up due to the absences of Christian Eriksen, Manuel Ugarte, and Kobbie Mainoo, leaving only Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro as midfield options.

Though he didn’t feature, Kone appreciated the experience, writing on Instagram: “Thank God for my first call-up to the first team.”

What Kone said about Amorim

Amorim looks set to included Kone in his squad to face Everton on Saturday afternoon. The midfielder was not involved for the Under-21s against Chelsea on Friday night.

It has also been claimed by some reports that the teenager could make his first-team debut before the season ends.

Kone is a deep midfield player who looks to try and control the tempo in possession and read play when his team do not have the ball. He enjoys anticipating, and then jumping into challenges.

He is the type of player United’s first-team have been missing in recent years but it is understandable that there has been caution about pushing him into the first-team picture.

However, it seems like Amorim may start integrating the Mali youth international in the coming weeks and months, which is a challenge the young player will enjoy.

Kone clearly has a good relationship with the head coach, who he claims is a “believer in the beautiful game”. The youngster also thinks that Amorim appreciates the youth.

Speaking in an interview earlier this season, the midfielder praised the United boss and explained that he will be working hard to take his chance in the first-team when it arises.

“The new manager is a believer in the beautiful game, he loves youngsters too,” Kone said. “I just have to work really hard and take my chance when it comes.”

It seems like that opportunity isn’t too far away for Kone, and every United fan will be hoping that he can take it with both hands and excel.
