Ruben Amorim’s message to the Manchester United dressing room against Ipswich Town speaks volumes about the head coach.

Manchester United drew 1-1 against Ipswich Town on Sunday evening in Ruben Amorim’s opening game as head coach.

Marcus Rashford scored within two minutes of kick-off in what looked to be a dream start for Amorim, with wingback Amad Diallo playing a key role in the goal.

However, after failing to capitalise on their early lead, United conceded a well-earned equaliser before half-time and failed to really stamp their authority on the game in the second half.

It was a disappointing result and performance but it came to no surprise for Amorim, who only had a handful of days to work with his squad in training beforehand.

What Amorim told Man Utd dressing room after Ipswich draw

“Amorim said their performance was a five out of ten,” a dressing room source told The Sun.

“He was impressed with Ipswich and thought the game was played at an incredible intensity. But he added that it showed just how much United need to improve.

“He was critical of one or two players for losing the ball and not being in the right positions.

“But he also said, ‘Some of you I’ve had for two days, some two weeks’, so he was realistic. He did say they were going to have to learn quickly.”

United have more games coming in the next weeks in the Premier League and Europa League to help build the patterns Amorim wants in the new system.

Amorim’s mixed approach can work

Amorim has been widely praised for his communication – both with players and media – and it seems like he can find the correct balance when teaching his squad.

Being realistic about the situation the team are in will help the situation for the team, but it does not mean that he won’t be ruthless and call players out.

That was also noticed on the touchline at Portman Road and it seems clear that the head coach won’t be a pushover even if he tries to relate to the players at just 39 years of age.

This rumoured dressing room chat shows the blend of characteristics many have spoken about in relation to Amorim in recent weeks and this approach will hopefully see United move in the right direction.
