After being forced off through injury, concerns that Benjamin Šeško’s injury is more serious than initially thought have sparked talk of Manchester United potentially moving for a replacement in January.
When Benjamin Šeško was brought on against Tottenham, Manchester United were in the midst of defending their one-goal lead they had gained in the 1st half, following a brilliant header from Bryan Mbeumo.
During his limited time on the pitch, Šeško found himself struggling to really get into the game, an issue the man he replaced, Matheus Cunha, also faced against Spurs, partly due to United choosing to sit off a little more following the opener.
The Slovenian was having a relatively quiet game until Mason Mount was able to thread a ball through on the counter for the 22-year-old, who, when trying to put United ahead once again, was subject to a last-ditch tackle by Tottenham defender Micky Van De Ven, leaving Šeško injured in the process.
Following the injury, Rúben Amorim sparked discussion with his comments in the post-match press conference in regards to the situation.
Amorim’s post-match comments
After a last-minute bullet header from Matthijs de Ligt to rescue a point for the Reds, Rúben Amorim seemed quite calm and measured throughout the post-match press conference, but did not hide his concerns surrounding the injury to Šeško.
When asked to comment on the severity of the injury, Amorim replied, saying, “I have no idea. Because it’s the knee, we never know.”
He also then went on to follow this up by saying: “I’m concerned with the injury because it’s in the knee. We need Ben to be a better team. We have to check everything; we have to check what has happened with Ben.”
With the prospect of the Slovenian being on the sidelines for the foreseeable future, as well as having the Africa Cup of Nations on the horizon, where United will lose two of their brightest attacking stars in Amad and Mbeumo, January reinforcements may become a necessity, and it is a possibility Rúben Amorim has not ruled out.
Potential January activity for United
Amorim himself said during the post-match press conference that activity in the January transfer window could be a reality with the impact of AFCON, admitting: “We are going to have a problem there, but we already knew that.”
He then went on to add to this by saying, “The management of that situation is going to be hard. But let’s see when the window is open, if we can improve the team, and try to repair something that happened. Until then, we have to take the chance.’

This seemingly open stance on potential January incomings for Amorim’s side has begun to spark some discussion amongst fans on where and who United should prioritise funds if they were to make any moves this winter.
However, until the severity of Benjamin Šeško’s injury is properly determined, any potential talk of January transfers will likely be put on hold, with the focus switching to United’s upcoming fixtures with a more favourable run-in coming their way and an opportunity for Amorim’s side to climb up a very congested Premier League table.
