What Rúben Amorim said about Chido Obi amid stunning Manchester United hattrick vs Chelsea
Chido Obi has been killing it in Manchester United’s Academy of late, and fans are calling for Rúben Amorim to give him a shot in the first team.
Rúben Amorim’s first three months at Manchester United have been anything but smooth since taking over from Erik ten Hag.
Appointed in mid-November with United struggling in 13th place in the Premier League and managing just one win in the Europa League, the 40-year-old set out to rebuild a club in turmoil.
There have been moments of promise, including impressive away victories over Arsenal and Manchester City, but inconsistency remains a concern. Under Amorim, United have won 10 of their first 20 matches, losing eight and drawing two.
Off the pitch, the challenges have been just as demanding. Three senior attackers left on loan during the winter transfer window without replacements arriving, while Lisandro Martínez faces the prospect of missing the remainder of the season with a knee injury.
With United in disaray, the club signed Patrick Dorgu and Ayden Heaven in January, although fans have started to call for the Portugese boss to delve into United’s Academy for reinforcements.
Obi’s brilliant hattrick vs Chelsea
On Wednesday evening, United’s U18s blitzed past Chelsea in the FA Youth Cup, winning 5-1 despite going 1-0 down in the early stages of the tie.
Young striker Chido Obi was no doubt the star of the show, with his brilliant hattrick sealing a fantastic victory for Adam Lawrence’s men on the night.
However, two goals from James Scanlon and a brilliant performance from Jack Fletcher in midfield have also raised eyebrows among keen-eyed Academy followers who are looking for future first-team talent.
“I’m delighted for the boys and the group,” Lawrence told club media post-match. “It was a real team effort. When you come into these games, there’s always some apprehension — you know it’s about how you deal with it on the night, how you perform.
“Overall, I think you’d have to say we deserved the result and the victory. Like any tournament, you’ve got to take each game as it comes and there’ll be different challenges within them. We’ve obviously overcome that tonight.”
What Amorim said about Obi
With Obi once again dazzling fans with his scoring prowess, many are calling for him to be given a run in the first-team amid the scoring troubles of Rasmus Højlund and Joshua Zirkzee.
However, when asked about the 17-year-old, Amorim was keen to explain that he feels the two first-team strikers are enough for him right now.
“He’s doing his job, he’s improving, he’s playing in the youth teams, and we have also other players that can play in that position,” Amorim said last week when asked if Obi may become involved in the first-team.
“Rasmus and Josh are there, we bought these two players, so we need to improve them and then sometimes the confidence can change a player.
“We will see in the end of the season, but, until then, we have two strikers that can score goals.
“They proved it in the past. Let’s see if we can improve as a team, to help them to score goals.”
