Roy Keane was on punditry duty for Manchester United’s 2-0 win over Manchester City on the weekend but was denied the chance to interview Michael Carrick.
Michael Carrick had the dream start as Manchester United’s caretaker head coach on Saturday afternoon after a dominant display against Manchester City.
The Reds won the game 2-0, keeping their third clean sheet of the season, but also had three more goals disallowed for tight offside calls.
Despite there being a lot of noise in the build-up to the game, Carrick managed to outclass Pep Guardiola at Old Trafford and deliver a memorable performance.
Roy Keane had major question marks over the appointment of Carrick before the derby clash. On Sky Sports punditry before the game, he stated that Carrick ‘failed’ at Middlesborough while he took digs at his wife and coaching team on The Overlap beforehand.
What Roy Keane said about Michael Carrick
Keane’s outburst earlier in the week on The Overlap was quite strange. He dismissed the coaching appointment of Steve Holland, an extremely experienced operator, but then questioned why an inexperienced Jonny Evans was part of Carrick’s staff.
After Carrick’s impressive first-outing against City, Keane was still not too impressed and somehow claimed that he came into a ‘dream scenario’ at United.
“Give him what he wants! Sign the contract! joked Keane after the 2-0 win over City. “Let’s judge it over the next few months.
“He is an English coach, the English media will be pushing for him. He has done well today, but let’s see how he does.
“Michael Carrick has come in to the dream scenario. Everyone is available, City at home, they’ve been little bit off it, he could have had a man sent off.
“Timing and a bit of luck, they have made the most of it. Take nothing away from him – but everyone just calm down.”
United block Keane interview
Following on from those comments, it is not entirely surprising to find out that United blocked Sky Sports’ request for Keane to speak with Carrick ahead of the game.
That’s according to a report from MailSport. Gary Neville instead spoke to his former teammate in the Old Trafford tunnel ahead of kick-off.

Carrick himself played down Keane’s comments in his pre-match press conference. “It didn’t bother me,” he said. “[Former players] are not putting more pressure on me. I don’t feel that. There are plenty of opinions around, some positive, some not too much.”
United fans have been far from pleased with comments from ex-players over the last week. Nicky Butt and Paul Scholes have taken flack for mocking Lisandro Martínez before his excellent derby display.
