While many have been celebrating Manchester United’s brilliant win over Arsenal in the FA Cup on Sunday evening, Diogo Dalot’s red card is a shadow over the result.

Manchester United clinched a place in the FA Cup fourth round after a dramatic penalty shootout victory over Arsenal on Sunday afternoon.

Arsenal started strongly, dominating possession early on. Gabriel Martinelli thought he had put the Gunners ahead after 20 minutes, but his goal was ruled out for offside, silencing the jubilant home fans.

United grew into the game and took the lead early in the second half. Bruno Fernandes showcased his class, rifling home a stunning finish after a perfectly timed assist from Alejandro Garnacho.

The turning point came with 30 minutes to play when Diogo Dalot received a second yellow card, leaving United with 10 men. Arsenal quickly capitalised, with Gabriel Magalhães finding the back of the net to level the score.

The Gunners had a golden opportunity to take the lead when Kai Havertz won a penalty, but Altay Bayındır denied Martin Ødegaard with a brilliant save to keep United in the game.

With the score tied after 90 minutes, neither side could find a winner in extra time. The match was decided by penalties, where United were flawless, converting all five of their spot-kicks. Bayındır turned hero once again, saving Havertz’s penalty to secure a 5-4 shootout victory and send Manchester United through to the next round.

Which game Dalot will miss after red card vs Arsenal

While many have pointed out referee Andy Madley’s poor performance at the Emirates, it’s unfortunate for United that his decision to send Diogo Dalot off was spot on.

The Portuguese full-back went flying in on Miles Lewis-Skelly in the first half, earning his first yellow of the night, before a needlessly reckless challenge in the second half on Gabriel Martinelli saw the 26-year-old receive a second yellow and, therefore, a sending off with 30 minutes to play.

Although United ultimately prevailed due to Bayındır’s penalty heroics, Dalot is now set to serve a one-match suspension.

Although the red card has come in an FA Cup fixture, his one-game ban will be served as United welcome Southampton to Old Trafford on Thursday evening.

Why is the ban not for the FA Cup fourth round?

If a red card is issued within a domestic competition in England, the ban is always carried over to the next domestic match, rather than the next game in the same competition.

United have seen this before, with Amad serving a one-match ban against Brentford in the Premier League after he was sent off in the aftermath of the FA Cup win against Liverpool last season.

The reverse is also true, with Andy Robertson missing a Carabao Cup tie against Liverpool after being sent off in the Premier League against Fulham last month.

Dalot has started United’s last 11 fixtures across all competitions, playing 90 minutes in nine of these, so he likely deserves a rest anyway.
