What Manchester United think about Harry Amass’ return amid Sheffield Wednesday loan ending in January

With the January transfer window on the horizon, Manchester United has begun planning for the future of a returning loanee star, Harry Amass.

Following his loan move to Sheffield Wednesday in the 2025 summer transfer window, young left-back Harry Amass has seriously impressed during his time at Hillsborough.

After making his Premier League debut for United against Leicester City in March, as well as several impressive performances in United’s U21s, Amass earned a loan to Sheffield Wednesday.

Wednesday has been struggling for results this season, and has also received a points deduction following several failed payments made by the owner. These failures include the owner’s inability to pay players and staff on time, as well as unpaid taxes, which have left the club in administration.

Despite the off-field struggles the club has faced this season, Amass has still been able to impress, following many great performances for the Owls.

This has led to more discussion around the youngster’s future, with him due to return from Wednesday in January, and United reportedly planning the next step in his development.

United’s plans for Amass revealed

Following a promising start to his United career, Amass has proven to be one of the club’s brightest talents, and one that United will want to make sure develops at a good rate.

According to sources at United in Focus, senior figures at United are reportedly very pleased with Amass’s playing time and performances on Wednesday.

However, with his current loan deal set to expire this January, Amass’s future is uncertain, as no decision has been made yet, despite the same sources at United in Focus also indicating that Amass would like to see out the season at Wednesday.

Additionally, following the success of Amass’s loan move to the Owls, United has reportedly considered making Wednesday a future destination for many others in the United youth system, given the high amount of game time and experience Amass has gained there.

What should Amass’s next step be?

With a final decision on the young left back’s future still to be made, United are still weighing up the best option for the youngster’s development and what will provide him with the best future pathway into the first-team squad.

Although with his current loan at Wednesday seeming to be going very well, with the player receiving a solid amount of playing time and experience, perhaps in January, United could maybe look to shift Amass onto a better-performing team in the Championship.

This would help further provide the player with more valuable experience playing in a team challenging for promotion, rather than Wednesday, where relegation seems like a formality due to the club’s point deduction.

Perhaps United could even look to reintegrate Amass back into the first team set up, with Dorgu being inconsistent and Dalot playing there out of position, it could be a great chance for Amass to make his mark in Ruben Amorim’s squad and even as a potential starter in the future.
