What Manchester United chiefs have told Kobbie Mainoo as new club enters January transfer race

With the January transfer window now fast approaching, clubs have begun to register interest in moves for the upcoming window, with a huge Serie A side reportedly coming in for Kobbie Mainoo.

Following one of the busiest transfer windows to date in the summer, with January almost here, clubs a preparing to bolster their squads once again this winter transfer window.

With United having a fairly busy summer with the arrivals of attackers Cunha, Mbeumo, and Šeško, as well as new keeper Senne Lammens, it is yet to be seen whether United and Rúben Amorim will continue to add to the squad this January.

However, with some players in the current squad feeling they’re experiencing a lack of game time and desire more minutes on the pitch, this could potentially leave the door open for more outgoing for United, with one of the Reds’ finest midfield talents reportedly being eyed by one of Italy’s giants.

Lazio eyeing move for Mainoo

According to reports from renowned transfer journalist Ben Jacobs, that have been covered by United In Focus, Lazio are reportedly interested in a loan deal for the young Englishman this January, with his playing time at United suffering since the arrival of United boss Amorim.

Following the monstrous success of Scott McTominay’s debut season in the Serie A, as well as Rasmus Hojlund’s promising start on loan in Naples this season, Italy could prove to be an attractive proposition for Mainoo.

Whilst covering this news, Jacobs can be quoted as saying: “Lazio was another club that made an inquiry in the last few weeks again about a straight loan or a loan with a buy option.”

However, United have maintained the same position they had in the summer, and they still do not want Mainoo to leave, with Jacob’s then adding:

“Manchester United are not really engaging with suitors because they’re telling Mainoo that their preference is for him to stay unless they find another midfielder. The feeling is that he’s needed as a squad player for Manchester United to make a push for some kind of European football.”

What’s the future for Kobbie Mainoo?

With the Mainoo yet to make a start this Premier League campaign, the academy graduates’ future at the club is far from certain, with a lack of chances and playing time provided by the manager, potentially driving the player out of the football club.

All be it, Mainoo does have a tough job on his hands with competing with United captain Bruno Fernandes for a starting position in the team, which is no easy task, it does severely limit the amount of chances he will be able to to receive with their being room for only 2 central midfielders in Amorim’s system, with one reserved for a typically more defensive minded player which Mainoo is not.

Despite his future at United potentially hanging in the balance, the club and fans alike will be desperate for Mainoo to stay, with Rúben Amorim promising both the player and the fans that he is a part of his plans and will become a key player for United.
