Gary Neville and Paul Scholes have highlighted the main reasons as to why Michael Carrick has managed to turn around Manchester United’s fortunes in recent weeks.
Manchester United were at risk of enduring another season of disappointment under the management of Ruben Amorim, but in recent weeks, they have managed to bring some optimism to Old Trafford.
Since being taken over by Michael Carrick on an interim basis, the Reds have successfully defeated the top two sides in the Premier League table.
These victories have completely turned United’s campaign prospects around, with a Champions League spot now well within the side’s reach.
The sudden improvement in United’s performances has caught the attention of the masses and has now been analysed by Gary Neville and Paul Scholes.
Neville’s disbelief
When discussing his former side’s sudden turnaround, Gary Neville made his disbelief clear, and even questioned how such a change in fortunes was possible.
Neville said, via The Overlap on YouTube: “I’m absolutely startled at the turnaround.
“Remember obviously, we saw a change of manager with Ruben Amorim to go to Darren Fletcher, and there wasn’t much difference in terms of energy and sort of strength, and they went to a back four in those games by the way.
“And then all of a sudden, from Fletcher to Michael Carrick in those two or three days, what has happened?
“I can’t believe it, I genuinely can’t believe it. And this is not just about [Bryan] Mbeumo and Amad because, to be fair, Ruben had them for a number of games.”
Amorim too rigid to see change
In highlighting Carrick’s success, the former Premier League stars were also quick to question what Amorim must be feeling as he watches the Reds from afar.
Neville said, “If you’re Ruben Amorim watching this at home, and you’re looking at these players, what are you thinking if you’re him?”
This was then responded to by Ian Wright, who said, “At the same time, Michael Carrick’s got something out of them that was there for that manager to get out of them.
“Remember, he was very rigid in what he wanted to do, almost to the point where he doesn’t even want to listen to anything that’s going on.”

This was also added to by Paul Scholes, who stated, regarding Carrick, “He’s played people in their normal positions as well.”
After only two weeks in the job, Carrick has clearly managed to get the masses onside. His next test will be a home fixture against Fulham, where his ability to control games will be under the microscope.
