Casemiro has been speaking about his future this week as he enters the final months of his contract at Manchester United.
Manchester United are on a positive run of form at the moment, with the Reds currently on a five-game unbeaten run which includes wins over Liverpool, Sunderland and Brighton.
The attacking firepower signed in the summer is proving to be worthwhile. Bryan Mbeumo has been the standout addition upfront.
But United’s improved performances also seem linked to the performances of Casemiro in midfield. The veteran midfielder has been one of Ruben Amorim’s best players in recent weeks.
His form is important after the Reds failed to make any midfield signings in the summer although his contract at Old Trafford expires at the end of the season.
What Casemiro said about his United future
Casemiro has headed off on international duty this week with Brazil and he was asked questions about his future in an interview with O Globo.
The ex-Real Madrid star explained how he wants to continue at the top level and be in the best shape possible for the upcoming World Cup.
He responded: “Football is my life, right? So it’s inevitable [to continue]. But I think my wife and family will want some time for themselves, yes. I’m one of those who think that in life you have to have a plan.
“But I’m into short-term goals. Of course, it’s inevitable to think about being in good shape for a World Cup, but you can’t expect to be in good shape for the World Cup if you’re not doing well at Manchester United.
“For the next call-up, I have to be in good shape. I think day by day: tomorrow I have a good training session, at the weekend I have to play a great game, and so on.”
Amorim is ‘really happy’ with Casemiro
While Casemiro’s contract expires soon, United do have the option to extend his deal by 12 months and that feels more plausible now than it did six months ago.
United could also potentially look to agree new terms with the 33-year-old on lower wages. Amorim has made it clear that he is happy with the midfielder.

Speaking ahead of the Spurs game last week, Amorim was asked about Casemiro’s contract situation and said: “Yeah, we don’t know what is going to happen. My goal is to continue to count with Casemiro, with Harry Maguire, that he has the same problem. I don’t know what is going to happen.
“Let’s focus on this season. I’m really happy with Casemiro, he is really important. I’m really happy with Harry, but I know what you guys are asking, let’s focus on this season and then we’ll see the next season.”
