Manchester United’s pursuit of Bryan Mbeumo hit a snag last week when it was revealed that Tottenham Hotspur had registered interest in the player.
Manchester United are edging closer to their second signing of the summer, following the confirmed arrival of Matheus Cunha from Wolverhampton Wanderers earlier this month.
The 26-year-old Brazilian international is poised to complete his £62.5 million transfer after finishing his international duties, and will sign a five-year deal with the Reds.
Rúben Amorim is still targeting further attacking reinforcements, with United confident of landing Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford, as the player has made clear his desire to join the club.
Although Brentford rejected an offer worth up to £55 million last week, talks are ongoing. United are determined to wrap up the deal swiftly, but Tottenham Hotspur have since joined the chase.
What Mbeumo has privately said about his summer plans
According to the Manchester Evening News, Tottenham are now “going hard” to sign Mbeumo this summer after appointing former Brentford boss Thomas Frank as their successor to Ange Postecoglou.
Mbeumo has been very open about Frank’s move to Spurs, admitting that he’s sure the Danish boss is “going to do well” in North London.
The report states that Tottenham are potentially prepared to offer the 25-year-old a higher salary package than United in a bid to swoop in and hijack the move.
However, it is stated that Mbeumo has privately told confidants that the only club he wants to sign for is Amorim’s side, leaving Spurs’ efforts looking mostly futile as the Reds look to strike an agreement with Brentford for Mbeumo.
United are also said to be confident that they can finalise a deal with the Bees for the Cameroon international. After a brief hiatus, the transfer window reopened on Monday and will remain open until the 19:00 BST deadline on 1 September.
United will continue to hunt for players after Mbeumo
Once Cunha and Mbeumo are through the doors at Old Trafford, United will look for another three potential signings as Amorim looks to rebuild the spine of his squad.
It is well documented that United want a striker. Although the head coach admires Viktor Gyökeres, he has made it clear he wants to sign for Arsenal, and new reports have stated United have initiated contacts for Hugo Ekitike and Victor Osimhen in recent weeks.
United are also keen on bringing in a new midfielder, although there is not much in the way of who this could be thus far.
There is also a chance that the club could sign a new goalkeeper to replace André Onana, with the 29-year-old not a popular figure among fans, and Aston Villa’s Emi Martínez reportedly keen on a move to Old Trafford.
However, to fund these further additions, sales must be made, with Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, and Antony all likely to leave.
