What Antony’s lawyer said about Manchester United winger’s arbitration case against Ajax
Manchester United winger Antony has filed an arbitration case against his former club Ajax over fines imposed on the winger before his 2022 transfer.
Antony made a big money move from Ajax to Manchester United in the summer of 2022 for a huge £85 million fee.
Before his move to Old Trafford was made official, several bids from the Premier League outfit were rejected by Ajax.
This led to the Brazilian winger skipping training sessions in Amsterdam and releasing an interview with Fabrizio Romano speaking about his desire to leave.
Antony’s arbitration case against Ajax explained
According to a report from Dutch outlet ad.nl, Ajax imposed three fines on Antony at the time of this, causing the club to withhold ‘hundreds of thousands’ of Euros from the player’s salary.
Antony did not agree to pay these fines and decided to turn to the arbitration committee in July 2024, with the hearing of the dispute having took place just after the turn of the year.
Those at the Eredivisie club were of the opinion that Antony was absent without permission during the period the fines were issued.
Alfred Schreuder, manager of Ajax at the time, admitted that the player was not “fully focused on Ajax” when he skipped playing the third match of the season.
Antony’s lawyer approached for comment on arbitration case
Following the emergence of this case, Antony’s lawyer, Frans de Weger has been approached for comment by the aforementioned outlet.
“I cannot say anything about the case as long as it is still before the court,” De Weger said.
The report finalised that the arbitration committee often make a ruling within a month, meaning that Antony’s case will likely be resolved in February.
All the while, his future at Old Trafford is up in the air, with rumours that he could leave for a loan to Spain before the end of January.
Antony’s agent recently admitted that he is open to leaving the club if that is what the decision-makers at Old Trafford want.
